Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Evolving Che Buzz

Variety's Anne Thompson is reporting that the "buzz is good" on Benicio del Toro's performance as Che Guevara in Steven Soderbergh's The Argentine and Guerrilla, which will show in tandem in Cannes tomorrow night. A guy who's seen both films told me last night that Del Toro's performance is so intense he's "almost scary."

I've heard two other things -- one from a journalist with a contact who's seen it, and a director who gets around and tends to hear pretty good stuff. The journalist claims that Guerilla gave his friend "the feeling of 'why am I watching this?" -- the guy having enjoyed The Argentine much more. The director says he's been told that Guerilla is the far superior of the two.

As long as it's not the "Why am I watching this?!" feeling I got in "The Good German".....

Jeff, with all your pre-release hype and anticipation for these two movies, how will that affect your viewing of them? Will you be more forgiving of flaws you might have considered significant in other flicks? I'm not saying the movies won't be great, but if they aren't will you be able to recognize that?

I dont understand this whole 2 Che movies thing. Are they 2 separate films or do they need to be watched together? If so, who in their right minds will want to watch 4 hours of Che? Also, will a distributor have to buy both of these films? What if a separate distributor buys each film? Does anyone think the 2nd release will do any business (eg, the 2nd, and superior, Capote film bombing)? I might be missing something -- can someone explain this to me, and enlighten me as to why 2 two-hour Che movies makes any sense.

Aris:
Maybe the first one ends in a cliffhanger. Will Che propose or won't he? Who is pregnant? Who dies?

The buzz is telling me that because Soderbergh hasn't made a good movie since selling his soul to Julia Roberts, I shouldn't expect much.

One would think, that with all the potential concerns one could have about these projects, Del Toro's performance(s) would not be one of them. The man usually delivers the goods.

It would be even better if the cliffhanger between the two films had something to do with werewolves....

The problem with the cliffhanger is that anybody who knows history knows that Che did not ultimately become a part of the Avenger Initiative.

A good performance by Del Toro can't save a crap/totally misguided film. Look at "Things We Lost in the Fire."

Che has a dream where he sees father riding past him there in the darkness, carrying a horn with fire in it. And he always knows that his father will be out there ahead of him, tending to that fire. And then he wakes up.

Che hears a voice saying, "If you build it, he will come."

He proceeds to build Che Stadium.
