Discland
edited by Jonathan Doyle
Mafioso (The Criterion Collection, 3.18.2008) Nino Badalamenti is a supervisor in a car manufacturing plant who hasn't taken a vacation in over two years. On his way out the door to visit his beloved childhood hometown of Sicily -- with his blonde wife and daughters -- Nino is handed a package by his boss and asked to deliver it to a powerful and influential Sicilian gangster named Don Vincenzo. Once in Sicily, Nino has a hoot seeing friends and family, but his wife has trouble fitting in and is unfairly dismissed as a snob by Nino's family. Even more worrisome, Nino finds himself entangled in an intricate web of secret mafioso dealings and is eventually sent on an unexpectedly... elaborate errand. (continued)

"Unfortunately, at least in the balcony which is out of the sight line where the filmmakers sit, the crowd noticeably thinned after intermission. A little less than half the seats in my 50 seat or so section were suddenly empty along with dozens of others scattered throughout the upper regions. Perhaps those moviegoers had dinner reservations somewhere? Or maybe they just knew how it was going to end. We've said it before and we'll say it again: You can't please everyone in Cannes." -- from Pete Hammond's Envelope report about last night's Che screening.

Che director Steven Soderbergh, costar Catalina Sandino Moreno, star Benicio del Toro prior to last night's Grand Lumiere showing.

i honestly think it is disrespectful to soderbergh and the gang. why beat someone who is trying to do something very unique in these days of spy kids 3d.

which i have never seen. oh no.

i think che might just be the cinematic highlight of 2008.

I think Mr. Kockum may have a point. It was the European Champions' League Final. And if people were intimidated by another two hours plus, they may have just opted out.

I think however, no matter what, nobody's reputation is going to be tarnished by this one. Those who do not like it are NOT calling it a fiasco/disaster/ego-trip/act of folly etc. The two films sound challenging... but isn't that part of what festivals are for?

I may find that I do not like the films, but I am delighted that someone has the balls to try something so seemingly utterly utterly different. Especially a Hollywood director... from Vegas to Cuba... not that is revolution.

Ah, good to see that Soderbergh has 'gone beard', as I have been for the last few months. Good look for him, probably the result of being hunkered down in an editing suite for weeks/months on end.

Cannot wait to see this, presumably the first truly awesome Soderbergh film since 'Solaris'.

Speaking as an ugly man who has had a beard since 1969, I can honestly say that all ugly men look better with beards. Yo, Bennie!
