I need to be fair and and admit that the career-spanning video on Tom Cruise's website is nicely cut. (The Air France terminal I'm typing this on won't let me load links, but it's www.tomcruise.com.) Now and then some of it makes you grin in admiration for the guy...truly. The one scene in the entire reel that brought a genuine smile to my face? When Cruise's Joel Goodson spots Rebecca DeMornay's prostitute character in the lobby of a plush Chicago hotel and does that little two-shakes-of-an-index-finger wag as I way of saying "I see you, you see me, we're both here...tah-tah!"

A Couple Things That Apparently Never Existed:
1) Losin' It
2) Nicole Kidman
Legend was about to be on the list, but they did manage to sneak in about two frames.

I thought that website was pretty cheesy myself, but he's had a legendary career. His run over the last 15 years is one of the great streaks in movie history, just home run after home run. He's obviously at a crossroads now and as a big fan of his I'm pretty concerned - Mission Impossible 4? Sean Levy? Todd Phillips? Blech. He needs to not panic and stay the course. Cameron Crowe, Michael Mann, P.T. Anderson, Spielberg. It's all about the directors.

I don't care how loony the guy is in real life. I still love Tom Cruise the movie star.

He needs to be working with the Wachowskis, Curtis Hanson, Zemeckis, David Fincher, Ang Lee, Soderbergh, Jim Cameron, Mel Gibson, the Coens, Scorcese, Chris Nolan, whoever. You get the idea. Tom Cruise working with Sean Levy just sounds so awful.

Perhaps more than any other director of his generation, Cruise has consitently worked with some of the finest directors who ever worked.
Also, The Legend is very underrated.

Cruise and Ridley Scott are two of my favorites but Legend is awful. I defy any of the apologists for the film to sit down and watch the whole thing. I was excited to revisit Legend when the extended DVD came out and it was painful. There are many wince inducing scenes and dialogue, that elf is always screeching some annoying line of drivel. The art direction is nice and the villain is spectacular, but Legend is a big thumbs down.
I wouldn't mind a MI:4, but it better be good. I can't imagine Tom will get the carte blanche budget. It will be interesting to see the creative choices made and how it comes together.

Tom Cruise has worked with a mightily impressive list of directors. The sad thing is that even the best of them have had a hard time getting us to forget we're watching Tom Cruise.

I thought Mann did a pretty good job of getting Cruise into character in Collateral.
