Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Heath Dolls

First, those stories about Heath Ledger/Joker dolls fetching $50 a pop on e-Bay don't appear to be valid, as this e-Bay page makes clear. Second, 6" Joker dolls are for eight year-olds. Serious collectors prefer the more detailed 12" or 15" tall models with their much better facial likenesses.

Either way, this is the first action figure I've wanted to own in a long time. I'll admit it -- it's partly the macabre aspect of a dead actor being sold as merchandise. I have a James Dean doll at home. I've also had four Universal-crafted classic monster dolls on my desk for the last three or four years -- the Wolfman, Dracula and two Frankensteins (one modelled on Boris Karloff's appearance in the original 1931 film, the other a copy of his look in James Whale's Bride of Frankenstein).

Most serious toy collectors that I know actually prefer the 8-inch figures. These types always have excellent articulation. The larger figures are usually nothing but cheap plastic statues with 5-6 points of articulation, tops.

I mean, what's the point of buying these toys if you can't even pose The Joker to look like he is giving Batman a blowjob?

I hope the Ledger family is compensated appropriately by WB.

Re: New? One-sheet

Notice it says, " A Film by Chris Nolan."

Nolan is hittin' the big time, and HE IS a big deal; contrary to what other people might think.

Huh? I think Jeff refers to the product by the likes of Sideshow Toys, Hot Toys, Takara, etc, which combine a highly detailed head on a super-posable doll body in replica costume. Those have more articulation than any 6-incher.

And at $80-$150, they have to appeal to the serious collector, because no-one else is gonna shell out that much.

That said, the 6" Joker is aimed at collectors; there's a smaller, 5" one sans scar that looks very little like Heath and comes with an action accessory.

Sideshow and Takara are very good, I'm talking about the MacFarlane-type movie figures which are pre-posed and tend to only have shoulder, neck, and leg articulation.

Oh, and the 6' figures have a great deal of articulation. 15 or so points, off the top of my head.

Since we're talking about ancillary tie-ins: If M&Ms get to make a special Indiana Jones edition, why not some "Dark Knight" Heath bars?

I'm not trying to knock Nolan, but the "a film by" credit doesn't actually mean anything. Ratner gets it all the time. It's not like an Oscar or something.

Richardson: Unless I'm mistaken, I believe this is the first time " A Film by Chris Nolan" has been put on a Nolan film. Yeah it might not mean much but at the very least, having " A film by..." on the poster of a film you've directed kinda, sorta means you've made it. At least until you make a stinker.

He got a "film by" credit on the Prestige one-sheet.

I'm not a big Nolan fan. If he ever gets better than Memento, I'll be surprised.

Insomnia was completely forgettable.
I can't make it through Batman Begins. That unnessasary car chase destroys it.

The Prestige is only good all the way through - its not a film you can pick up anywhere and enjoy.
