In a Pig's Eye

Quentin Tarantino has told Canal TV that he's "just finished" the first draft of Inglorious Bastards, and "if all goes well" it'll show at next year's Cannes Film Festival? If you buy that, you don't know Quentin.

As a staunch defender of QT's films, even I'm sick and tired of his endless babble about "upcoming projects" that won't happen. Put the bong down, Quentin.

It's taken him 10 years to do a first draft? Maybe in 8 more years he'll have that Western written

Wait, wasn't it reported two years ago that he'd finished his first, hand written, draft? Does this mean he's finally had someone type it up for him?

Regardless, I'm very interested to see QT make a real movie, rather than a movie about other movies (and I liked the KB movies for what they were). At least we'll know whether he's really washed up or just (finally) done masturbating.

I dig his movies too, but after the meandering and mediocre DEATH PROOF I can't say I'm looking forward to his next boring chit-chat fest. Could the dialogue in that movie have been any duller or more stilted?

And yeah, he probably needs to cut down on his drug use; that shit robs you of your ambition.

I read the draft not too long ago. General Macarthur's 20-minute monologue about Deanna Durbin's pussy, delivered on the beach at Corregidor, rocked.

I came across this quote yesterday and somehow thought of Tarantino in the back of my brain:

"If you pretend to be good, the world takes you very seriously. If you pretend to be bad, it doesn't. Such is the astounding stupidity of optimism."

-Oscar Wilde

I have a major Tarantino schadenfreude going on since Kill Bill.

I like Tarantino a whole bunch, but if he ever made a movie that wasn't about other movies, I must've missed it.

Oh, wait, I guess 'Four Rooms' was more about a TV show than other movies.

I agree with DZ on the WW2 thing. But if QT can bring a real edge and sense of fun to the project, it could find an audience. The problem is we have been conditioned to treat WW2 (deservedly so) with such reverence that it may be tricky to market a violent fun movie on the subject.
DZ,
If QT really wants his movie to find an audience he should make it about hackers, it worked for Die Hard 4, right?

Interesting to note that one of the main movies QT is ripping off for this project, conveniently called... Inglorious Bastards... is being released on DVD in July.

Maybe next year at Cannes, QT can say he's working on the final draft of THE VEGA BROTHERS, with Travolta and Madsen set to star.

P.vice, you probably just nailed the story. There's no way QT could get a finished movie to Cannes next year but he just put an obscure, soon to be released DVD on everybody's radar screen. Tarantino is not afraid to give a shout out to an older film for love of th game, but does anybody know if he has a financial stake in the DVD?

Each time QT talks up a new project, my inner optimist pops off with the old "maybe he'll grow up a bit this time" mantra. Though I'm a big fan of his last two, if he really wants to grow as a filmmaker, he needs to head further down the Jackie Brown road and tone down the tongue-in-cheek fun a tad.

Maybe the obligatory honor and reverence inherent in most WWII films will shake him free of his compulsive tips of the hat and coax him to find his own style.

Or maybe he just wants to remake The Dirty Dozen. Either way, can't wait.

Fair enough.

Still, I see a difference between homaging other movies while making genre movies, and doing cartoons of chopy socky movies from the 70s.

Also, what movie did you think JACKIE BROWN was about?

I once read an interview of Zemeckis and Q.T. in the L.A. Times where they asked each of them what their next projects were going to be . In that interview, Q.T. mentioned that he was working on a WWII film. He acknowledged that war films could be tricky, but if you did it in the context of the mission, he thought you could get away with it.

When was this interview, you ask? Why, around the time of the Oscars in early 1995 (Gump and Pulp Fiction were the two favorites to take B.P.). So he's had this thing bouncing around in his skull for at least 13 years. What's one more, more or less?

"Also, what movie did you think JACKIE BROWN was about?"

I wouldn't say any of his movies is about one specific movie. Even when they say 'Reservoir Dogs' is stolen from 'City of Fire', that's really reductive and limiting; there's all sorts of influences all over that movie. Tarantino is flying high off of his love for movies writ large.

'Jackie Brown' is about blaxploitation movies with a small dose of more-generalized-'70's crime stuff. On one level, it's really designed around Pam Grier as a cinematic icon (which, i think, is the only big failing of the movie -- she can't quite carry it).

I think I'm just using the phrase a little broader than you, but I don't mean it in a perjorative way. I think the same thing could be say about Robert Altman, Paul Thomas Anderson, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas (obviously), Godard, most Scorsese movies, Peter Bogdanovich (double-obviously) and the Coen brothers, to pick some examples. And I'm sure somebody could make a convincing argument applying it to Hitchcock and a few others that I'm not as sure on.

MDOC: "If QT really wants his movie to find an audience he should make it about hackers, it worked for Die Hard 4, right?"

If he wants to get with the 21st century, he needs to cast his next movie with actors who can still do action scenes, and not just make cameos. And he needs to pull his camera away from the action, and stop doing close-ups of chicks' feet.

JapAdapters: "Still, I see a difference between homaging other movies while making genre movies, and doing cartoons of chopy socky movies from the 70s."

In QT's case, they're remakes, not homages.

Richardson: "Even when they say 'Reservoir Dogs' is stolen from 'City of Fire', that's really reductive and limiting; there's all sorts of influences all over that movie."

You're right. It also steals from Pelham.
