Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Next Nine Hours

The Weinstein Co. sent out invites to press late yesterday to attend a coffee-and croissant announcement event this morning at the Martinez beach, something about a big literary acquisition. Then the Woody Allen/Vicky Cristina Barcelona press luncheon happens at the Martinez Palme D'Or restaurant from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Some will slip out around 12:20 pm in order to get down to the Palais (a good half-mile walk) for the 1 pm Indiana Jones screening at the Grand Lumiere, which is going to be a madhouse. Then comes the Indy 4 press conference at 3:30. And then the writing of the full review, which I probably won't finish until 5 pm or so. (11 am NY time.)

Man, I'm so jealous right now.
A 1pm show full of critics dissecting the movie in their minds like its The Godfather.

Jeff - I have 100% confidence that you are going for the ride and an old-school lesson in how to do a movie like this. Uncle Festus, weed-killer quips in this - no thanks.

Indy fanboys await the truth.
We want it ranked with where it stands in the Indy family. Better than Temple; as good as Crusade - that's all I need to know to then work out my expectations going into the 'economy-class' midnighter on Wednesday.

I don't even think it matters how Indy 4 ranks among the prior three....this one just symbolizes how much fun we take out out of films in todays age...by over-reporting and over-analyzing the hell out of them.

Yes, I've stayed up all night.

I guess I just want to know if it can be regarded as of the same ilk. Not this 'Indy in name only' stuff like the Star Wars prequels felt
