Discland

Mafioso (The Criterion Collection, 3.18.2008) Nino Badalamenti is a supervisor in a car manufacturing plant who hasn't taken a vacation in over two years. On his way out the door to visit his beloved childhood hometown of Sicily -- with his blonde wife and daughters -- Nino is handed a package by his boss and asked to deliver it to a powerful and influential Sicilian gangster named Don Vincenzo. Once in Sicily, Nino has a hoot seeing friends and family, but his wife has trouble fitting in and is unfairly dismissed as a snob by Nino's family. Even more worrisome, Nino finds himself entangled in an intricate web of secret mafioso dealings and is eventually sent on an unexpectedly... elaborate errand. (continued)

Outcast on TCM

In early April I wondered if anyone cares enough about Carol Reed's Outcast of the Islands (1951) to put it out on DVD. Those dedicated wackdoodles at the Criterion Collection, say. Well, hail hail rock 'n' roll because Outcast will air on Turner Classic Movies come Friday, August 22. August is traditionally TCM's one-star-per-day month and that day will be devoted to Outcast star Trevor Howard. The complete August schedule (with some other interesting rarities) is viewable here.

Being on TCM doesn't guarantee a dvd release. I've been waiting for the Lionel Barrymore Arsene Lupin.

Cool, also I See A Dark Stranger and Green For Danger are recommended. (Too bad no They Made Me a Fugitive, though; that one's well worth picking up on DVD, a very bleak British noir.)

Jeffrey, did you see that High Noon was on last night? Looked really good to me. Maybe they were using that new transfer you were talking about.

TCM is the greatest channel on television. Nothing else comes close.

I finally saw Michael Powell's very hard-to-find "Age of Consent" on TCM the other night. Not great -- kind of like "A Good Year" possessed by the artsy angst of "Blow Up" -- but very pretty and worth seeing. Vintage James Mason performance and copious amounts of nudity from a teen-ish Helen Mirren.

Jeff would say she's too fat, but her zaftig teen self is totally hot. (As have been pretty much all her other selves.)

As the comic strip Achewood said of Mirren's propensity for nude scenes, "It's like her breasts are afraid of the dark."

Achewood is awesome, but that quote is actually from the British sitcom Coupling... or so a Google search tells me.

One of Mont Hellman's very favourite films.

Weird, I'm really having trouble imagining the circumstances under which I would even have heard a quote from Coupling, let alone then attributed it to Achewood. But it doesn't turn up in a search there.
