"When I was in school I'd go to an art house and everyone there would be in their 60s. Today I go and they're all in their 80s." -- Roadside Attractions' Dustin Smith at today's independent distribution panel at the American Pavillion (which doesn't have wifi as we speak).

Good quote, and all too true I'm afraid. It's a good thing people are living longer so that art and rep houses have some attendance; a bad thing that my 42-year-old self tends to be the youngest person in the room when I go.

Isn't 80 the new 60?

True in both states I've lived in (NC and Fla) from 96 till now.
I'm 30, and I'm always the youngest in the theater by 30 years ... or I'm the only one in there.

I always figured it was because the arthouse movies were cheaper and quieter.

(Because at the Angelika in NYC, which is neither cheap nor loud, it attracts all the college students who don't realize what a shitty theater it is.)

Yep, I've found it to be true too. Depressing to go and see movies that are considered hip and cutting edge in other countries, like Layer Cake, Sexy Beast, In Bruges etc, only to find yourself sitting at what looks like an AARP meeting.

A surprising number of twenty-somethings showed up at the Castro for Petulia and Walkabout the other night, so don't give up all hope.
