Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Post Works Crunch

Steven Soderbergh has been doing his frantic last-minute editing of Che at Post Works, a Soho facility on Varick. ("The best in the world for film and video post-production...no one compares. For real." -- Bob J.) A magazine editor told me over lunch a couple of days ago that he's spoken to a Che guy who wonders if they'll finish in time for the Cannes screening on Wednesday, 5.21.

I was interning in the PostWorks building until last week. Would have love to crossed paths with him and asked about KING OF THE HILL, which has yet to get a DVD release. On the Seabiscuit commentary, he told Gary Ross it was in the works with Universal, but that was five years ago...

He might have been referring to the region 2 disc that Universal released in 2007:

I'm always amazed at how fast he can work. And not only is he frantically cutting the Che films together, apparently he's already started shooting on the Informant as well.

"Post Works, a Soho facility on V."

Even as an ex-New Yorker, I can't figure out Wells pedantic hipster lingo on this one.

The facility is at 100 Avenue of the Americas, or as everyone simply calls it, 6th (VI)

The editing suites are on the 10th floor.

Anyone got a suggestion on the 5 thing?

I am curious if the quality of his movies is affected by the speed with which he works. Of course, there is no way one can prove a negative but it is amazing how he can go from one movie to another, sometimes simultaneously.

Fucking stupid to rush it.

Eh, I don't see any problem with rushing towards a finish in order to make it to a film festival. He'll always have the option of making changes before the general release.

I wonder if it has been slightly harder to post since it was shot with the Red Camera and the workflow might not be as smooth as a more established process.

I agree with Kris T. Why ruse it? Even if he can make changes after the festival what's the point of the whole thing? Just so that it can be shown at Cannes? If it is not well received that stigma will follow it until the end of the year no matter how many cuts Soderbergh makes.

the cut of ocean's 13 thast played at cannes was two or three scenes longer than the version in theatres so all of this last minute cutting is just to get Che in shape for the festival.... then gauge it there, cut again etc.

Is there any chance we're going to get this epic CHE as an actual domestic release? Why the fuck not? Go big or go home, as they say.

Post Works is pretty nice, but there's another place almost across the street IIRC that has a nice "at-home" vibe to it that's just a little bit better IMO.
