Postal Boycott?

A press release sent out earlier today claimed that U.S. theatrical distributors "appear to be boycotting" Uwe Boll's controversial Postal. The film was scheduled to be released theatrically nationwide, but will now open on only four screens in four cities on Friday, 5.23.

"Theatrical distributors are boycotting Postal because of its political content," said Boll. “We were prepared to open on 1500 screens all across America on May 23rd. Any multiplex in the U.S. should have space for us, but they're afraid."

American exhibitors are a fearful conservative-minded bunch, to be sure, but the only thing that moves them one way or the other is money. If they're saying they don't want to book Postal (which I still haven't seen, by the way), it's because they're afraid it won't sell enough tickets.

Postal currently has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 29%.

Well that, and it probably sucks like a black hole. Uwe Boll films are the only time I'd ever advocate censorship.

As I understand it, Postal marks the big-screen acting debut of MiraJeff.

Oh, and it's way better than any other Boll movie. Still not great, but easily the most insane thing he's done. It's not unlike Southland Tales in many ways.

Even if Postal was any good, I doubt dumping it in 1500 theaters would be the wisest release strategy.

And this has nothing to do with this post, but I never understood the sheer hate for Uwe Boll. I am not interested in his movies and I am suspicious of his directing abilities, yes, but I admire his bravado and his talent for actually producing fairly large productions after another. Good for him if he's able to get them done. As long as I am not forced to watch them à la Alex in Clockwork Orange, I am happy for him.

And 29% seems like a respectable RT score for Uwe Boll. The runner-up is Blackwoods with 11%.

Yeah, that's a pretty forceful action; boycotting a film that's poised to make about 50 bucks domestic.

Maybe if Uwe Boll offered to box all the multiplex exhibitors in America simultaneously. You know, like the Burly Brawl in The Matrix with hundreds of Agent Smiths. That would make more money than any Uwe Boll film.

Sadly, Mirajeff's cameo is not in the film. However, Postal does contain a shot of Uwe Boll being shot in the crotch, which would explain the high tomato rating.

For what it's worth, DZ's Troma comment is about the most accurate description of the film. It's not very good, but it knows it. Unlike Dungeon Siege.

I love Uwe Boll. Sure, his films are terrible, but do video game adaptations really deserve any better? And I love his theatricality and over-the-top attempts at self-promotion. Having Uwe Boll around is like having William Castle, P.T. Barnum and Ed Wood all in one person.

I respect him as a producer, self-promoter and mad-genius, it's amazing that he continues to make films, they obviously make money somewhere. But you'd think after the 10th film or so, he'd start to understand the language of film. I admit I almost always watch the latest Boll film, just to be astonished by how utterly inept they are.

He calls himself a genius in this video, he does it with such a straight face that I think he's serious, but it's such a ridiculous thing to say, that it has to be a joke. Most likely he's completely self-deluded, no matter what, he continues to be entertaining.

The opening scene of Postal:

Maybe he has learned? That's the best scene in a Boll film yet. Actually fairly funny and pretty ballsy. Though I'm sure the rest of the film doesn't hold up.

I can confirm The Winchester is correct. I saw the film back in October and it seems I've been left on the cutting room floor. Too bad, I was planning on living off the residuals for the rest of my life.

But seriously, and you can quote me on this, Postal is easily the best movie of Uwe Boll's wretched career. I actually laughed a considerable amount considering some of the ridiculous and potentially offensive (to some) subject matter. You gotta give the guy credit for really going for it and not pulling punches. As a political statement, it's no less efficient than Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, a superior comedy but no deeper than Boll's latest. Let me put it this way. It's definitely better than The Eye and Prom Night and Anamorph and The Signal and it could've been way worse. Dave Foley is off the charts crazy in the movie and his lack of modesty gives Jason Segel's a run for its money.

Technically it wouldn't be my big screen acting debut because it would've been me getting my ass kicked, which I can assure you is not an act, nor would it be my first feature film appearance because of Heckler, although you could argue that that hilarious documentary hasn't technically been released yet.

You can also catch a glimpse of me in Entourage Episode 3:19 - The Resurrection. And while we're on the subject of me, feel free to check out CSIndy.com this week for my review of Young@Heart (which Gruver was absolutely right about and deserves credit for) and a Summer Movie Preview. I'm in Boston watching the Celtics get their asses kicked on the road again. Headed to Vermont for my brother's college graduation. Just felt the need to respond since a few of you were expecting me to weigh in. Enjoy the weekend... the weather here unsurprisingly sucks.
