Fox News' Liz Trotta making her initial Sunday gaffe about certain parties wanting to "knock off Osama...er, Obama...well, both, if they could." And yesterday's apology. For those who, like me, have been off in a realm of their own.
How do you say something like this -- how does a savvy adult of either gender think something that flippantly toys with the idea of a presidential candidate's death? -- and then dismiss it as merely an aspect of a "very colorful campaign"?

"Mis-statements" like it are the equivalent of the old "Senator, do you still beat your wife" question. Spit it out into the air, let it take flight and it'll stick or it won't. Same as the "Barack Hussein Obama" refrain -- it'll make the nightly news, they'll repeat it ad-nauseum, then a hastily muttered apology that follows won't get the same play, because the former's already dug in. Nothing new, just politics as usual.

I don't know. I was once in a theater where the audience spontaneously cheered at the line in the Vantage Point trailer where someone says "the president of hte United States has been shot."
That's not to say it is appropriate for a news program (or even a news commentary program) but I honestly don't see how flippantly thinking about assassination is outside the realm of thought. Over the last two years I've heard many serious and flippant comments about Obama needing to be careful

Jeff - you have her quote wrong: "...which some are reading as a suggestion that somebody knock off, uh, Osama..uh, er, Obama...uh, er (smirk), well both if WE could. (laugh)"
She wasn't using the ol' weasel wording "they", she was tipping her hand (as if it needed tipping by being a Faux News contributor) to exactly what her thoughts were

I can't believe she hasn't been fired - imagine an CBS,ABC or NBC commentator getting away with such a statement
