At 6:15 pm last night Variety's Pamela McLintock projected a $20 million Friday for Sex and the City. But sometime after 11 pm Fantasy Moguls' Steve Mason posted a "shocker" report that SATC earned $28.25 million yesterday and is looking at a $70 million gross by Sunday night.
A Friday figure in the neighborhood of $20 or $25 million easily ranks as the biggest opening-day tally for a romantic comedy. As McLintock pointed out, The Devil Wears Prada -- the last sizable chick-flick hit -- earned $9.4 million on its opening Friday and $27.5 million for that weekend.

The only "shocker" to me is that none of the pundits would even go out on a limb and project a $50M+ weekend for SATC before it opened. But then again, prior to...
May 2: Iron Man estimates were too low.
May 9: Speed Racer: too high.
May 16: Prince Caspian: too high.
May 22: Indiana Jones: all over the map, but too high, in many cases.
More than ever, it seems, the experts know nothing.

This is easy to explain: how many other romantic comedies have had a very popular TV show as a big lead-in?

Dead on, and the 2nd week drop for SATC will be record breaking...

Like someone said...SATC has a huge built in audience from the popular tv show. It seems like no one even thought of that. I have a feeling it will drop off in a big way next week though. It looks like Indiana Jones has a pretty big drop this week too. Could Iron Man actually end up earning more this summer than Indy? it has hung in there every week scoring big numbers. I think at the end of the summer the 2 big stories could be SATC and Iron Man.

It would be nice. I'm not thrilled with Iron Man, but it was a positive experience, and Downey is great. Indy on the other hand ....
I'm surprised by the 70 figure. But not completely shocked. I only field so many questions about upcoming movies from people I meet, and a couple of women have asked about it. But I would think there is going to be a major dropoff next week. Still, that's a high figure to drop from.

Oh, and I see people refer to The Devil Wears Prada all the time as a romantic comedy, which really isn't accurate, and my guess is probably not accurate for SATC, either. We might have to bring back the phrase "Woman's PIcture." Although "chick flick" covers pretty much the whole spectrum, rom-coms and woman's pictures.

I'm likely never gonna watch SATC, but for some reason, I get pleasure out of it helping Indy 4 bomb, maybe because of how George tried to turn one of his own SW films into a bad chick flick. It's also funny how all that money and marketing about a movie which emphasizes how old a guy is couldn't go up against a film which emphasizes how young the older women leads feel. Maybe if you had went for a similar idea, George, instead of just giving him super powers, it wouldn't have come down to this.

How big of a drop is Indy taking this weekend? This looks like a drop of Unbreakable/Hulk size proportions.

Indy 4 also officially ranks as the "worst" of the series at IMDB. (It's got a lower score than ToD.)

Indy is hardly a "bomb"
Good for SATC. It was a fun chick-flick.

It's grossed $330,103,020, and it costs more than half of that without P+A? I'd say that qualifies as a bomb.

Indy 4 will make well over $500 million when all is said and done.

Maybe 5-10 years ago it'd make that much money, but Lucas kept holding up the production and giving us those godawful prequels in its place.
