Sydney Pollack Has Left

Heartfelt, pared-down dialogue by David Rayfiel. Superb acting, in particular, by Robert Redford -- has he ever shown such feeling in his eyes in any other performance? (Toward the end of this scene, I mean...obviously. The first part is all about set-up.) Marvin Hamlisch's score gets what's going on, but I've always felt that its sappiness works against the film's emotional potential. But it's one of the most moving man-woman scenes in cinema history, and it's all the work of Sydney Pollack, who passed yesterday.

I just watched THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? saturday night, for the first time. I don't how I went so long w/o seeing it. It's a great picture with a pretty amazing ending. The guy did good, solid work over the span of his career. Check out his supporting turns in CHANGING LANES, EYES WIDE SHUT, MICHAEL CLAYTON, etc. My brother once summed up SP's acting career, saying "he's the best onscreen prick ever." That's a compliment. Ditto his work in H&W.

God bless you, sir.

There are parts of "The Interpreter," his last film, that rank with the best of his work (check out the "bomb on the bus" scene if you don't believe me).

I loved his work, and he LOVED film and actors and filmmakers.

No doubt he's already doing great work up there. He will be sorely missed.

He was just a great great talent. I loved him in Tootsie.
And that scene reminds me why I liked Robert Redford before he went political....he was such a sincere "young" actor.
