Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Toback in the bar

I'm now back in the Orange Cafe and writing up a fast interview piece on the sharp and gifted James Toback and his extremely well-received (even by Cannes standards) Tyson, an emotional, straight-to-the-point portrait of the former heavyweight champ. I have between now (7:10 pm) and 9:30 or so to finish and publish, as I need a good seat for the 10 pm screening of James Gray's Two Lovers.

Tyson director James Toback during our brief chat about an hour ago at the Gray d'Albion bar -- 5.19.08, 5:50 pm

Toback and Tyson publicist Cynthia Swartz of 42West -- 5.19.08, 5:35 pm.

I'm sure this didn't come up at all, but with the attention Toback's TYSON documentary is getting, do you think this could be an impetus for his films THE BIG BANG or LOVE AND MONEY to get a DVD release? I've always wanted to get the full story on the latter - it's always felt really abbreviated, and I know it got really battered between its Lorimar backing and Paramount's indifferent release.

Fat guys need to stop with the sculpted chin strap beard, it only makes the double chin look even more grotesque. Man up and grow a real beard.

Frankly, the chin strap looks stupid on skinny guys too.

This is a minor Toback work. BurmaShave and his marauding horde of freewheelin'
know-nothing jackasses should watch Fingers followed by The Gambler and then Downey in The Pick-Up Artist. They might learn something.

Wells, how was Toback?

Sharp? Gifted? The James Toback who made "Fingers" and "The Gambler?" Isn't this also the James Toback who reputedly, uh, "paid attention" to the rather homely Pauline Kael once upon a time, supposedly in return for good reviews in "The New Yorker?" You mean that unmitigated cad of a James Toback?
