Speed Racer opens seven days from now, and new tracking has it at 84, 26 and 3....obviously a weak number, although there's no telling with family audiences. What Happens in Vegas is running at 80, 32 and 7 (with first-choice numbers among women being closer to 11 or 12). Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, which opens on May 16, is running at 96, 40 and 12 -- pretty good. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Paramount, 5.22) is through the roof, of course -- right now at 89, 56 and 22.

Indy is going to be the only film from summer 2008 to hit 300 million domestic.
Speed Racer is going to be a flop, or perceived as a flop when it does only high 80 or low 90 million domestic.
I really wish that What Happens in Vegas would just come and go already; so sick of seeing those aggressively annoying tv spots. And the stupid eyes-only billboards.

I was really surprised by Speed Racer. It's fucking dynamite. Word of mouth is going to be strong and it can never hurt when it's better than everyone is expecting.

I am shocked by those tracking numbers, but I still believe that 'Prince Caspian' will be the high grosser of the summer.
It's a sequel to a movie which, in December, opening against 'King Kong', managed to outgross every summer movie of the year but 'Spider-Man 2'.
I have a feeling that Caspian's "40" will all wind up seeing it, while Indy's "56" will dissolve quickly.

Just correcting a small error. I presume you meant 'every movie except Star Wars III', which was the highest grossing film of 2005 ($381 million vs Narnia's $292 million). Spider-Man 2 came out in 2004 and did $374 million (second to Shrek 2, which did an insane $442 million).

I saw the new Indy trailer today before Iron Man. Much better than the teaser, which I thought was not-bad.

actionman: People called V for Vendetta a hit, and it didn't make that much money, compared to the last Wachowski movie, so...

Christmas release, Jesus themes, who knew? Summer might not work out as well, though, especially when the books are better.
Anyway, I still have faith in Speed Racer being number one that weekend.
And I'll agree with Jeff that Iron Man didn't completely deliver, but Favreau's greatest special effect is making Paltrow look attractive. He deserves an Oscar for that alone. The fights were fun, and Terence Howard was fine as Cuba Gooding, Jr., but I was disappointed that they chose to rip off the Doc Ock "death scene" from Spidey 2 for the climax. The Stark-as-a-playboy subplots also dragged out longer than necessary, and felt kind of wedged in more than a part of the main story. I'm also not sure why that reviewer thought the film turned conservative in the second half, since most of the flick feels like it's using Moore and Obama talking points. [I.E. weapons manufacturers are helping terrorists more than us, and that we need to do something about Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan, etc.]

Bud: That extended Love Guru trailer was also slightly better, but the Mini-Me scenes are still awkward.

The Love Guru looks like a festering pile of dung...nothing more, nothing less.
V for Vendetta was a modestly budgeted film (considering the Wachowski's involvement) which was released in March, not at the begining of the traditional summer movie season. Anything under $100 million domestic for Speed Racer will have to be seen as a disappointment.
I think the film looks fair at best; the CGI looks interesting but nothing else is doing it for me with that film at the present time.

Folks,
I, too have seen SPEED RACER. Now before I'm accused of being a Studio lackey, I have to say I absolutely loved it.
It is indeed dynamite. And wildly entertaining. Truly, a movie for all ages.
I'd be very surprised if it doesn't do at least 200 million domestic. I also believe it'll be one of the top five all-time grossers in Japan. At least it's gonna' surprise those of you who post here.
It's also perhaps the most family-friendly film released in years.
But don't take my word for it. The film speaks for itself...

Speed Racer is either going to be a massive, candy-colored disaster or it's going to be the only movie all summer that succeeds in making me feel like a little kid again for a couple of hours.
I hope it's the latter, but either way I'm there.
