Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Tribute

Come July 9th, this is the guy I want standing on my desk. I'm going to lay out the money right now. Heath Ledger wasn't a friend (hardly) but he always smiled and gave me a "hey" wave when we made eye contact at parties or press gatherings, and he always gave me two or three minutes when he wasn't being swamped. For what it's worth and in a weird sort of way, having this guy on my desk will be, for me, a way of burning a candle for him.

Wells: Always liked that pic you took of him at some party and he's winking at you when you clicked. Gotta admire a guy (dead or not) with a sense of humor.

Do you really think Heath would want you to fork over a C-note to this corporate marketing scheme as tribute to him?

Jesus, p.Vice, do you honestly for one second not think that Heath knew what he was getting into when he signed onto The Dark Knight? This kind of merchandise is inevitable. Sadly, now it'll be a hot sell for collectors to capitalize on his death. But fortunately Jeff wants it for sentimental reasons. Kudos!

From the second trailer, Heath's Joker looks to blow Nicholson away. He's a crazed, but calculating Joker. Nolan and Ledger said they want the craziness to come just from his eyes. Also, the lick-lipping will go down in film history.

Does anyone do one of these things any more without getting a cut of the merchandising? I imagine at least a few pennies of every Joker toy sale will be going to Heath's estate.

Yeah, Jeez, P.Vice, talk about missing the point. Jeff's basically saying he's picking up the fanboy tchochke because he can see the real human being under it, chuckling at the thought of being commemorated that way.

It's like a pre-politics day here at Hollywood Elsewhere for once, don't spoil it.

Jeff, you should get out of LA more often, it clearly does your soul some good.

I'm sure a good portion of the proceeds from those toy purchases will end up going to his daughter... hardly a bad thing.
