Vegas

Presumably people are aware that What Happens in Vegas, the Cameron Diaz-Ashton Kutcher film (20th Century Fox, 5.8) that seems a little too chick-flicky for my tastes, is previewing nationwide tomorrow night. Not at 7 or 7:30 pm but at 9:30 or 10 pm, apparently. In some theatres, at least.

There's a special place in hell for whoever put these two together in a movie.

THAT is what you think is wrong with the movie?

It's too much of a chick-flick?

This is a really big WTF moment for me. I honestly lost some respect for you on that one, big guy.

There's a WHOLE LOT wrong with that trailer, but it would never occur to me that the real problem with watching Ashton scream and mug and pee in the sink and yell about "Dick Banger! Dick Banger!" was that it was TOO much of a chick flick.

That's like when people say McCain is too liberal.

Well, that's thunderously stupid of them. Let's say I wanted to see that tomorrow night (I'll wait for the reviews, but let's pretend). But, alas, I have an eight month daughter (true). I'd love to leave her with a friend or relative, but gosh, a 10pm showtime means we won't get back to the sitter's place until midnight and it'll be close to 1am before we get to bed, ready to be awakened at 7:00am by the human alarm clock. Hmm, thinks Mr. and Mrs. America, I guess we won't be attending that sneak preview. If only it had been at the normal time of 7:00 or 7:30pm.

Ironically, I have the opposite problem next week. My wife and I are attending the IMAX Speed Racer screening down at the Bridge. It's a pain to get down there, more so because the screening starts at a stupidly early 6:30pm. I had to call in a favor for such an early sitter date. Had that too started at 7:30, there would have been no problem.

No offense, Scott, when I say that I don't think their target audience has kids.

In general, parents of eight-month old kids are not the target audience for anything (except maybe late-night infomericals about how to get crying kids back to sleep).

Technically, you're right. But I'd presume the point of a sneak preview would be to spread word of mouth in all demos. Point being, a 7:30pm show would have brought in the teens and the grownups.

If they have to preview it the week before, it's either too niche, or it's awful, or both.

Saw it two weeks ago, the best bits are in the trailer to give you an idea of just how bad it can be.

Chick flick? You have to be kidding, it's just an obnoxious comedy riff on War of the Roses (with far less bite and talent). The humor is far more guy friendly in fact, though there's some forced romance toward the end to appeal to women.

The only thing people will remember is the great blue and gold dresses Diaz wears in two scenes, and how Kutcher could still pass for 25 whilst she's aging quickly. Queen Latifah plays their counselor and with only a few words of dialogue she quickly shows how much more talent she has than that pair.

If you want something too chick flick try Made of Honor. There is a decent and more mature than expected chemistry between the leads that's spoiled by painfully bad scripting. Every time you think it might have potential, it shoves in dumb jokes about Scotland or thunderbeads.

To Wells, or anyone who's seen the film: is there a reason why these two fucks don't split the money?
