All-Time High

The car is hereby retired except during thunderstorms. The motorcycle is better for getting around anyway. Thanks to the thief who stole my bicycle 18 months ago. It's great living in a section of a sprawled-out city without subways.

Wow, half price gas. I gotta get to America.

Don't move to Europe, Jeff, you'll have a heart attack with the gas prices.

Until recently, I was using the LA metro (considering how much of it ISN'T underground it's hard to call it a "subway") when it was near enough to something I could use a bike in combination with it.

Then, a few weeks back a friend came to visit and on our way to see Indy 4 at the Dome we came across a spot check by Sheriff's checking for fare jumpers transferring. We dutifully showed our $1.25 one way receipts and had been waved through by one deputy when another double checked my friend's fare card. "This is only for one line, you guys need different fares to get on the next one."

Yes, LA has to be the only subway in the US that will charge you for each separate line of their shitty underdeveloped system. It also means if more than one person is traveling together, you don't really save on gas using it which was the main reason we did it (a one day pass is $5, which is only worth it if you plan to use buses too).

Jeff: We got subways. It's just that you need buses to get to them. [Thanks for nothing, Henry. http://www.laweekly.com/news/features/the-subway-mayor/349/

here in sweden the current price for 1 litre of gas is about 2.13 usd, which is an all-time high.

don't know about your gallon system, seems wack.

and you know what else is whack? your total dependence on autos. yeah, you complaining about gas prices is moronic. try the bus for once in a while. oh yeah, according to you americans you'd have to be a non-white minority or poor to sit on the bus.

or completely psychotic like ellen page in 'tracey'.

in the states we pay for units called gallons...2.13 per liter is about 8 bucks per GALLON...whose hyper-taxed socilaist system seems wack???

corrections: pay for --> pay by...socilaist --> socialist, obviously

...gas prices are high but people seem to be subsituting the whole price for what they once paid instead of just the incremental difference...i had someone say to me the other day that a 40 mile round-trip commute now costs them an extra 8 bucks per day with gas at $4/gal...i had to point out that he'd be paying $2/gal minimum, and thus is paying only an extra 4 dollars per day...

...not to minimize the impact it's having on some people ,but most people seem to overstate the hardship...

The problem is the buses in L.A. are overcrowded, underfunded, and currently redesigned by descendants of people who gave us the Yugo. Plus, due to zoning laws, a car generally ends up being faster than a bus. And to add insult to injury, the MTA is run by corrupt goons who like price-gouging commuters for pointless pet projects, while falsely advertising that they're a viable alternative to cars.

bd: Manhattan apartments cost a lot, because, pollution from Ground Zero aside, it's actually worth living in NYC. I'm still wondering where they managed to come up with some of the insane prices for the dumps in L.A. I can't believe some idiot realtors actually expected anyone around here to take them seriously, when they advertised condos in the "low" hundred thousand range on billboards.

Maybe they thought if they could convince enough rubes to blow millions on houses next to plants vulnerable to fire in Malibu, they could do the same for people who actually live and work here-but they were wrong. And they only added to the crappy housing market, to boot.

Aside from the convenience, the nice thing about walking almost everywhere is that I don't have to endure tedious hours on a treadmill or stair machine trying to fend off belly-bulge and ass-droop.

But I feel for you rolling centaurs, I really do.

It really is a shame that the 2nd largest city in the country has such bad public transportation. L.A. is so spread out however, I don't know how it will change.

I lived there for 10 years never, took a bus or subway. I moved overseas, where gas has always been super expensive. The cars here are smaller, there are more scooters and the public transportation is easy to use. I also walk a lot. I don't belong to a gym but weight less now than when I used to work out six days a week at my gym in L.A.

What are people going to do when they can't afford to fill up?
