Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

In tribute to what I keep hearing and hearing is James Franco's superb comic performance in Judd Apatow and David Gordon Green's Pineapple Express (said to be his best since playing James Dean in that Mark Rydell TNT movie), here are episodes #1 and #2 of "Acting with James Franco." Comedy releases him on some level.

I actually thought the third one (link available at the end of those two) was the funniest.

"Rebel Without a Cause? What's your cause, not sniffing jackets?"

Also, Franco in these clips is a dead ringer for the young, scruffy Bruce Springsteen.

Two years from now, when someone decides to remake True Romance, Franco will make a perfect Floyd.

He looks like a thinner Baldwin brother.

Judd Apatow must have been so confused about the way Franco has been used by Hollywood in the last ten years, probably almost as much as Wes Anderson has been by the attempt to turn Owen Wilson into a romantic comedy star. Glad he's helping us remember how funny Franco is with PINEAPPLE.
