Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

From a new Vanity Fair spread about Hollywood's New Wave. I know two of these guys -- Amanda Seyfried, 22, co-star (along with Meryl Streep) of Mamma Mia!, and Kristen Stewart of Into the Wild, Adventureland and What Just Happened?. But I'm just not that into Emma Roberts (Wild Child) or Blake Lively (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants). Okay, I haven't heard of them.

Seyfried, Roberts, Lively, Sterwart.

I spent a good portion of Panic Room trying to figure out if Kristen Stewart's character was a boy or girl.

Blake Lively is going to be a very big star. She has that thing some of them have and you can see it early on.

I'm assuming that being twice as old as these girls does not necessarily enable me to pick two.

Damn.

A couple years back, there was a midnight screening in L.A. of the infamous '80's film TEEN WITCH, with Robyn Lively appearing in person. Despite having just gotten off a plane after a long press tour for SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELLING PANTS, Blake Lively hauled herself and her luggage down to the theatre in order to show her support for her big sister. That is a class act.

I've been a fan of Seyfried since TV's "Veronica Mars" and "Big Love," and I've liked Stewart in movies such as PANIC ROOM, IN THE LAND OF WOMEN (she was the best part of that so-so movie), and INTO THE WILD. I've never seen "Gossip Girl" or SISTERS OF THE TRAVELING PANTS, so I can't speak about Lively, but I was not impressed with Roberts in NANCY DREW.

I'm a definite fan of Lively, the sister of 80s staple Robyn Lively. She's terrific on Gossip Girl (currently, my favorite guilty pleasure on TV - I'm way out of the show's targeted demographic but the writing is terrific and I'm a sucker for Kristen Bell's cynical, acrid voiceover narration).

Seyfried is the only girl in that roll call who has really impressed me. Her sexy space case in Mean Girls and her angsty daughter in Big Love prove her worth. Kristen Stewart is sullen and sort of took me out of Into the Wild with her self consciousness (look out though, there are a large number of sexually confused girls and boys who will defend her for days). Rpberts is charmless Hollywood nepotism at its worst. Lively was interesting before she joined the vacuous Gossip Girl.

HA! MilkMan, that was good.

K-STEW IS THE NEXT BIG THING.

TWILIGHT IS GOING TO BE HUUUUUUUUUGE.

(Plus by Hollywood logic, she OPENED "The Messengers" pretty impressively.)

Thanks to her last couple movies doing well, it was certainly odd (but enjoyable) when she popped up for a nothing, ten-second bit part in JUMPER.

Great, more underfed pixies whose idea of sounding real is to stutter like an NPR reporter. But..but..but.. It seems like every other new young actor does this, is it a new acting technique or something?
