Better Than Expected

Sergei Bodrov's visually dazzling Mongol (Picturehouse), easily the finest biopic of the legendary Asian warrior (and certainly heads and shoulders above Dick Powell's The Conqueror or Andre De Toth's Mongols), has averaged a very decent $26,627 on five screens for a 3-day tally of $133,136. Somebody did something right.

Box office wrap up. Kung Fu Panda made a lot of money. Sequel will be green lit by this time tomorrow. Zohan made Sandler money. He'll be back next summer sporting some more silly crap. Indiana Jones made more money. Over $250 million now. SATC dropped pretty harshly as expected. It'll be playing the small houses by next weekend. Iron Man nudges closer to $300 million. Narnia will make less than 1/2 the original. That's really bad news for Disney. Baby Mama and Made of Honor are still in the top 10? WTF?

...and Speed Racer, which will out endure all of them, continues to "fail".

Anyway, with the success of Mongol maybe now we'll finally see the 1992 feature version with Charlton Heston and Richard "Two Moon Junction" Tyson as Genghis Khan!

Nice scenery, but it's inert in terms of drama.

Funny thing is, it's basically fiction. There is no actual documentation of Genghis Khan's life. It's all myth and conjecture.

Shouldn't Zohan count as a disappointment, since Sandler lost to a cartoon? [Technically, his movies are the same thing, but still...] And Indiana Jones is a flop. A flop with a profit, but a flop nonetheless. As for Mongol, if it did well for itself, it's due to Asano. He's got a good international following.

John: Speed Racer should make its money back on home video, but whether or not it'll be one of those cult hits people watch on a regular basis in ten years and turn into a classic is the real question.

D.Z. please, in all your wisdom and thoughtfulness, explain the 'Indiana Jones is a flop' comment. I don't want to get into the merits of the actual film, just tell me how it's a flop financially. It'll pass $300 million stateside and has made $500 million worldwide in 2 weeks. Finally tally, say $750+ million worldwide. So, how is it a flop?

There's no way it'll make $750 million. And if Box office prophets is correct, its costs means it actually only made $250 million, with most of it being worldwide.

And we all know making $250 million in profit before DVD is horrible. Keep telling that to the folks who produced Speed Racer.

Goodnight.

Undercover: Making $250 million in profit from a film produced by two directors who grossed at least double that amount during their last two tent-pole films is horrible.
