The big thing about the just-announced iPhone 3G, apart from a guarantee that it'll load websites twice as fast, is cost -- the 8 GB version will retail for $199 and the 16 GB version for $299 vs. $400 for the current 8 GB version, which started out selling last June for $600 or thereabouts. A $400 drop in price plus improved features means every 8GB iPhone user in the world will give their '07 phones to their kids.

The 16 GB version will come in solid black and white models. Here are the specs for both sizes.

Boy, the early adopters sure took it on the chin with this one.
On the bright side, if the average joe can spend $400-600 on a cellphone and then give it to his kids a year later, maybe the economy is doing better than I thought.

BUT...the monthly data plans are rising by $10 a month (not sure if this is only for the 3G, or if it applies to the old ones too. Presumably not).
So you pay less up front, but once your mandatory two-year contract is up you'll have actually paid more (based on the more recent iPhone prices of $299 and $399 rather than the initial high price).
Some may argue that it's well worth the extra for the much faster data speeds, of course.

My usual rule of not buying any new electronic product until 6 months after its release no longer seems to be infallible.
All my early adopter friends who felt screwed over after the $200 price drop today feel like Jobs dick-slapped them in the face with this one. Sheesh.

Yeah, how dare a company actually make their products better and lower their prices at the same time. And how dare they make it accessible to the riff-raff public, rather than just the elite group who pays $400 for a cellphone.
If they kept the prices high, everyone would complain that Apple was gouging them. It's only because they're selling them by the boatloads that they can afford to lower the prices. I say "Bravo". (And no, I don't own one.)

Has anybody heard anything about what today's iPhone 3G announcement means for the fate of the phoneless iPod Touch? Right now, the 8gb iPod Touch costs $299 -- $100 more than the 8gb iPhone 3G with all its new features.

will it be thinner and smaller and fit seamlessly in the pocket of nice slacks??
...and anyone who couldn't wait a year and shelled out 500 bucks for the EDGE iPhone deserves to be dick-slapped by Steve Jobs.

yeh, but everyone that paid the higher price got to fool around with the wonderful phone for the past year so I don't suppose many are unhappy about that. it's not always about getting something on sale ya know. And the older versions will get all of the software loaded free at the beginning of July so I still don't think we're going to be very unhappy about that.....

That's never fazed Apple before, why should it now?
In all seriousness, one reason people are pretty comfortable being early adopters on Apple products is because Apple is traditionally very conservative with price drops. They seem to have thrown that approach out the window with the iPhone, what with the drop last September and now this. (And some people were fuming mad about the September price drop so you'd better believe they're not happy with this development.)
Of course, the downside of that attractive new price price is that it's subsidized and requires a two-year contract with in-store activation, so no more buying the thing without a plan and unlocking it at home -- I'm sure there are people who would still be willing to pay more than $200 if they could get it without the contract, but that's not an option for the 3G. So let's not pretend this is some fantastic altruistic gesture on anyone's part.

Yes, it'll end up being more expensive after two years, but well worth it for faster speeds...
I held off on the first one, but I'll probably get the 3G -- I'm sure I'm not alone, this will be huge for apple and AT&T.

Yes, but the touch doesn't require a subscription or contract... so it's not really the same thing.
