Oy vey...the Gods really do seem to be lining up to bash poor M. Night. Even when people try to write a non-critical, generic description, they unwittingly get a shot in. The current rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 20%, although Ebert did give it a thumbs up today, so that's something, I suppose. Not having seen "The Village" or "Lady In The Water", I'm not ready to join the bashers just yet - I kind of feel sorry for the guy. Of course, if I'd seen the last two pictures, maybe I'd be calling for his nuts along with everyone else.
115th - watching THE LADY IN THE WATER should be something akin to a dare, like walking over hot coals. I tried twice but could not make through the whole thing either time.
And having just seen THE HAPPENING - yes, it is that bad. Astonishingly bad writing and acting, and once you get used to the suicide trick (this takes about ten minutes) no sense of suspense or real action. Yawn.
(SPOILER, but not really)
For the gore-hounds, if you've seen the trailers, you've seen the movie, minus one or two instances and a little more bloodshed. I am almost conviced this got an R-rating due to it's suicide-prevalent premise more than anything else.
When I started to watch Lady in the Water on cable some time ago, I happened to have had a few drinks in me already. I couldn't make it through the film without getting up and having one more drink of scotch.
I watched 'Lady in the Water' on cable after getting really stoned.
It was hilarious. A perfect combination of pretty good staging, horrible ideas poorly written, and awkward acting.
And everything I've heard about 'The Happening' makes me think that, in a similar state, it will be similarly hilarious. The same people I saw 'Catwoman' and 'Southland Tales' with are all really excited to go to this.
Not comedy, drama, horror, or liberal propaganda. The Happening is designed to convey one simple, yet powerful message - do not fuck with Fairfield, Nebraska.
Actually, listing it as a comedy is about right. I went in wanting to give The Night another shot after the disasters that were The Village and Lady In The Water... but man-o-man was this one BAD.
I was into it for the first 15/20 minutes or so but then it just started turning silly. Any film that has people outrunning wind is a heaping pile in my book.
Oh... and Betty Buckly gets the award for the best worst impersonation of Piper Laurie.
Hulk smash little homicidal plant movie! The first numbers came in and Hulk will win big. But Happening did a little better than some thought it would. Hulk probably crosses 50 mil. If it didn't eat up its audience in one day, then mpossibly 55. Happening might limp to 30. Poison word of mouth my prohibit that. It's going to finish behind KFP wither way. Third place isn't very pretty. Hope it was cheap. Zohan dropping fast.
But... The Happening is a comedy. Its the biggest bait and switch ever pulled off. It starts as a serious thriller, and then one cue after another reveals that this is a tongue in cheek satire. Honestly, anyone who doesn't get this 20 minutes into the film is simply part of Johnny Q. Public, who were never meant to get this film in the first place. This is Mars Attacks!, this is Death Proof people. But instead of incessantly winking at the camera, this film refuses to clue in the casual moviegoer. Either you can accept that M. Night wanted Wahlberg, Deschanel, and everyone else to overact, or you can keep complaining about the bad acting and miss out on one of the more refreshing movies this summer has to offer.
