The Indy That Died

Is this the real deal ? Frank Darabont's script of Indiana Jones and the City of the Gods, I mean? The legendary Indy 4 script that Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford allegedly liked, but which George Lucas didn't and vetoed? Apparently so.

But if you're interested in reading this 11.4.03 draft, you'd better copy it quick. I've been told that Paramount will come down hard on anyone who's linking to the original website that's running it, which is an outfit called PDF Screenplays.

Yes, that script is the real deal. I read it a while back, and my copy came from an impeccable source.

It has a lot of good stuff, and a lot of not-so-good stuff, like the scene with the snake on page 82...

Half way through and it's not blowing any wind up my skirt (it even has the infamous refrigerator in it) but I will give it this: it sure knows what to do with Marion.

THIS is the Marion from Raiders 20 years later....

I think Darabont nailed Indiana and Marion but pretty much dropped the ball on everything else. Still, that alone makes it superior to Koepp's draft.

If this is real, then the WGA arbitration panel should hang their collective head in shame. Huge chunks of this script are in Koepp's draft. How in the hell did that guy get sole screenplay credit for stitching together other peoples' work?

Richardson Author Profile Page says ...

Doesn't somebody have to challenge the credit for it to go to arbitration? Darabont seemed to wash his hands of the project and walk away gracefully out of respect for Spielberg after Spielberg sided with Lucas.

Dravot Author Profile Page says ...

Feathers,

Because a great deal of this stuff pre-dated Darabont's draft, and most of it was provided by Lucas. So Darabont is just as guilty of "stitching" as Koepp. The WGA arbitrators had to go back through ALL the existing drafts, back to the earliest material.

There's a surprising amount of stuff that makes this feel like "fan fic". Far too many references to the dialogue in Raiders.

And while this does read like the Marion from Raiders, I'm a little disappointed with that aspect. I can't really see a fifty-something Karen Allen doing or saying half the stuff that's in here. It feels like someone wrote it way back in 1981, having just seen Raiders. I guess I was expecting this to depict Indy and Marion as having greatly matured- and not the bickering, cliched couple that's on display here.

Jennifer's Body is a terrible script - diablo totally got it wrong. she should have reversed the female characters - have the bad girl become the hero and the nerd girl become the man eater...it would have given each character an arc...whatever...

the indy script is basically the indy and marion show, twenty years later with him trying to win her back and that element of it WORKS better than the father/son crap in the new one. I guess Lucas and Spielberg didn't want so much Marion...bummer. Other than that, the script is really busy and, while it handles the alien storyline a little better, it's still an ALIEN Storyline. Whatever...the whole Indy thing is so disappointing to me at this stage...I wish they never made it...

I'm gonna bet Lucas was worried some of the fight and death scenes would push the R rating. And I imagine Ford didn't want to do any stunts. Plus, like the original story for Golden Compass, there might be an atheistic tone to the script which would alienate the red-state demo.

Anyway, I have to say that the Darabont fridge scene had more oomph than the Lucas one. Definitely less jingoistic and more nuanced than the final product, too. Plus it's a better modern political commentary than Sith. Nice Castle of Cagliostro homages, too, Frankie. I will admit the plane scene could be a bit shorter and more realistic(given Ford's age), though. The "snakes on a truck" gag was kind of cheesy, though.

I was originally going to blame George only for the final product, but I have a feeling Stevie had a part in it, too, since it's clear that he turned it into the Shia LaBeouf Show, instead of Indiana Jones 4. Basically, though, Darabont's movie pretty much got eviscerated in a desperate attempt to play it safe.

I missed grabbing the script, but I read the review of it on G4. No Mutt in Darabont's script? While I definitely don't think that he was the worst part of the film, I guess we now know that Lucas wasn't the only one who tampered with the story until it was basically neutered.

What the hell is it with Spielberg and the daddy issues? Not looking forward to Lincoln so much now. While Gettysburg, Shiloh, Antietam, etc. are raging outside, the whole movie will focus on Abe dealing with Tad's youthful hijinks.

Maybe it's me, but that seemed like an on-the-set adaptation; somebody saw a groundhog mound, thought it would work for the opening mountain gag, and then either they or somebody else decided to make it a running gag in the opening.
