Has anyone seen a trailer for Hancock that has significant footage of Charlize Theron? I'm told by someone who's seen it that she has a fairly large costarring role, but the trailers are entirely (or almost entirely) about Will Smith, his super-powers, his drinking problem, going to prison, getting well, etc.

Will Smith's last three movies - average gross $199.8 million.

Charlize Theron's last three movies - average gross $11.0 million.

It's not rocket science.

i've wondered about this as well, and my guess is that she's the villain and it's a reveal and they're trying to hide it. also, box office gold that girl is not. and the film does star the biggest movie star in the world... so it's not particularly difficult to understand what they're doing over there.

Funny you ask, because after months of wondering this very thing, just LAST NIGHT I started noticing TV spots that were heavily Theron-centric. Can't recall what they were airing during and if that had anything to do with it, but they are finally putting her in the ads.

She probably requested explicitly in her contract to keep her name and image disassociated from the marketing of this movie. Like those Western stars who cash in by making liquor ads in Japan that they hope no one back home will ever see.

Does somebody have Wells' cell number? Because they should call and tip him off that one of his sons is editing the site behind his back.

Because, there's no way someone with as many years of experience as he has would fail to grasp why a Will Smith movie is being marketed as a Will Smith movie.

Either that or he stood out in the sun waiting for that AAA truck waaaaaaay too long yesterday....

Hmm, seems to me he did, Grady. Unless you know something I don't. Which might be hard considering my roommate worked on the movie so we have every draft of the script. I don't get it, what part of Ehrlich's post is wrong?

Everything about this movie looks like a decent on the superhero movie except, why, why, WHY did they have to make Will Smith's costume look exactly like the X-Men's? I mean, it's so goddamn close that it's all I think about whenever I see it. It's Drunky the mutant whose uncanny powers allow him to mumble all his lines.

Christ! Wells wasn't asking why are they focusing on Will Smith - he fucking knows that. He was commenting on how strange it is that the trailers pretty much leave Theron out completely. And he's right - until now I had no idea she was in it. I only remember Smith and Jason Bateman from the trailer and that's it.

Insneider: I've seen the movie. She's not the "villain." As Rothchild said, I cannot imagine how you would reach that conclusion if you'd actually read any of the drafts of the script--even going back to when it was called "Tonight, He Comes."

If she's just now appearing in the trailers, I'd guess it's part of an obvious marketing strategy. They spent a few weeks with the Smith-focused, action-heavy trailer to reel in the young males, and now, having done that, the suits are now rolling out a different trailer, with Theron, in the hopes of actually getting a few women to see this thing. This is not a new approach - romantic comedies do it, for instance - Run Trailer # 1 with some jokes to get the males, then Run Trailer # 2 with some mushy parts to get their girlfriends. This trailer has the scene of Theron sympathetically watching Smith on TV giving a "sensitive" speech, talking about how he wants to improve himself (and also hinting that she's a possible love interest for him) - they're making an effort to appeal to the ladies. The suits are a crafty lot, they are.

The movie looks good. The part with Smith in the X-Men type outfit is not. I had no idea Theron is in this film. Must be a reason. Looks like another hit for him. He is the king of the 4th of July holiday.

Joe, she is Bateman's wife (or sister maybe).

I am not cool enough to read scripts before I see the movie, but it's pretty clear she has a major part in the movie and for ONCE, THANK GOD, the trailers are not revealing everything. So Theron 'missing' is a good thing.

My guess is that Bateman is the villain - one of them has to be!

Watch her in this clip - which has a major reveal for those who don't like to know beforehand.
