Get Smart's first-choice number was 26 compared to 12 for The Love Guru, so it's no surprise that Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Duane Johnson and Alan Arkin have kicked Mike Myers' backside. Smart will end up with $36,627,000 and $9300 a print by Sunday night. The Love Guru opened and closed with a projected $13,976,000 and $4600 a print. Game over.
The Incredible Hulk will make $21,171,000 by Sunday night, which represents a drop from last weekend of about 62%. Not a good hold, especially given that Hulk is not going against another big action film this weekend. It was off 70% last night from previous Friday. On its second Friday Ang Lee's Hulk dropped 76.5% with an average weekend fall of 67% or thereabouts, so the new Hulk is doing a little better, but not by much.
Kung Fu Panda will make $20,873,000 -- off 36% from last weekend. A decent hold. The Happening will cbe off 67% by Sunday night -- a weekend tally of $9,973,000. Indy 4 will make $8070. The total cume is over $290 million, meaning it's sure to crest $300 million. You Don't Mess With the Zohan willl make a projected $7,031,000 this weekend, off 57% -- it'll be a push to $100 million.
Sex and the City will hit $6,170,000 -- off 37%, $132 million cume. Iron Man has topped $300 million with this weekend's take of $4,034.000.
Tracking on Disney/Pixar's WALL*E (opening 5.27) is 84, 41, 10 -- a very strong number one week out for an animated feature. Wanted (also 6.27) is tracking at 75, 40 and 5 -- fair, not so hot. Will Smith's Hancock (7.1) is running at 85,52 and 16 -- huge. Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy (7.11) is tracking at 69, 33 and 5...okay, decent, not stupendous. Journey to The Center of the Earth (7.11) is running at 59, 17 and 2 -- trouble.
Eddie Murphy's Meet Dave (also 7.11) is running at 36, 17 and 0 -- a bad number no matter how you slice it. I'm guessing that the regular folks started to sour on the guy when the news got out that he bolted out of the Oscar ceremony after he failed to win for Best Supporting Actor. That was the thing that tipped the scales. A Murphy comedy getting a zero first choice three weeks from opening? You tell me what it means, but how many interpretations can there be?

Jeff, I hate to break it to you, but I doubt 99% of
the American population knows Murphy left
the Oscars early. So, I doubt that had ANY impact
in his status among the vast majority of the county.
Only inside-the-beltway, Hollywood types have
turned against him for taking an early exit from
Oscarland. The movie looks terrible and that's
why the numbers are in the tank.

I have yet to see a single ad for Meet Dave short of a poster. No commercial, no trailer, no nothing. Apparently I'm not watching the sort of stuff they're selling it on, which I can take solace at.

Is the Murphy movie even getting released? It's awareness could be diddly squat right now because it isn't being pushed in the slightest. Aside from an internet trailer I haven't seen one add for it yet. Nowhere. Zilch. Not that that's bad. The whole film can rot in a dump for all I care. But I thought it had been bumped to the fall. I don't think Murphy can afford Pluto Nash 2. If it tanks the world will probably have to suffer the wrath of another Klumps film. God forbid!
At least Myers film bombed. Thank God. The world makes sense every once in a while.

It's insanely hot here in Lumberton. This is not supposed to happen. I want my fog!
On the other hand, it gives me a chance to pretend it's actually summer -- you know, like we used to have when I was a kid, when we'd go to a silly escapist movie to get out of the heat. And, shockingly, it's looking like Kung Fu Panda -- a movie I barely registered before today -- is gonna be the one.
The comedies look like crap, and Indiana Jones and the Tarzan Monkey Nuclear Refrigerator never happened in my universe, (the way Jaws 2 through 7, the Halloween sequels and those Jar-Jar flicks don't exist). The Happening looks hilarious, but it can wait. Dorothy Vallens doesn't want to see Hulk smash. So, the panda.
Strange summer. I never expected to see Speed Racer, either, let alone like it.

What were the movies Ang Lee's Hulk faced on its second week? Because this Hulk walked into two high profile comedies. I'm actually it beat Love Guru (which yeah, looks like shit but people love them Austin Powers movies so who knows?). But, in the meantime, are the Hulk's "legs" officially short and stubby or will it continue to place in the Top 3 again next week? I'm honestly just curious for no legitimate rational reason at all. Besides being a dork.

I'm not really surprised. No one wants to see Alba outside of a tight outfit in a comic book movie. And Timberlake is like a better-looking Federline with slightly more talent, but equally worthless when not with Britney Spears.

It would only make sense if "Get Smart" had done as badly. The fact that it got even a few good reviews is mystifying.

Jimmy: Lowered expectations is why Get Smart is being received so well. It could have ended up being so much more awful, but we thankfully Segal didn't defile a classic series like DePalma did with Mission Impossible.

Sorry, but the American public is more disgusted with Eddie bailing out of his responsibilities on being a dad.
Knocked up that Spice Girl & ran away, claimed the baby wasn't his.........

It is not surprising that LOVE GURU tanked. It was a project that Brad Weston brought in and oversaw the production. His last few movies include DRILLBIT TAYLOR, STOP-LOSS and HOT ROD and the next home grown Paramount proper project shepherded by Weston is CASE 39. Anyone care to guess how that will turn out? So without the outside help of Dreamworks, Marvel, JJ, etc., Paramount would be a total joke. That what you get when you get someone of Brad's caliber supposedly running production. How much longer should Lesher keep him around for him to take the blame? I suppose Weston will ride out his releases but not given any more authority to make his own movies.
