Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign,
Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the
Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered:
Cloverfield was a major success.

It's a teaser. I expect nothing more than "scattered adrenalized footage." However, that shot with the leaping bike is pretty damn cool. It reminds me of the "Bourne jumping through window" shot.

I guess Dan Bradley, the brilliant (but not safety conscious) second unit director of Bourne 2 and 3, is ripping himself off. I don't care as long as the action is exciting and Forster never does any of his Stay "visual tricks" again. Casino Royale isn't a repeat viewings movie, but Craig is my favorite Bond. I don't have that loyalty to Connery because I wasn't born then.

I'd bet Brosnan is very jealous, since he all but begged and pleaded to take the series in this very direction, long before the Bourne series made it allegedly acceptable. Don't ya just love how the cold, vengeance-fueled Bond that everyone hated in Timothy Dalton with License To Kill (or The Living Daylights, still the most 'real' and complicated spy story in a Bond film since From Russia With Love) is now considered hip and cool.
Granted, it's not about the 'directon', but the quality of the film. Martin Campbell made two vastly different 007 films, and they are both two of the best non-Connery Bonds ever. The key is keeping the characters grounded and intelligent, and making the action logical enough to follow and enjoy. Bitter pill that Martin Campbell never got credit for either of his two rejuvenations of this series. In a just world, he would have become the new Terrance Young after Casino Royale.

I could fault it for trying to look/feel like a Bourne film but...damn...this looks like a Bond film worth seeing in the theater. I can't wait. And hey, it's coming out in November. Does that mean we can expect an Oscar campaign?

Let's have a moment of remembrance praise for
Peter Hunt, the editor/2nd unit director of most
of the Connery films and the director of
"On Her Majesty's Secret Service" On the
latter, Hunt perfected his rapid fire jump-cut
editing style that pumped so much extra
adrenalin into the Bond action sequences...and
was ground-breaking for its day.
After that, the films fell back into the hands of
the British Field-Marshall directors (Guy Hamilton, Lewis Gilbert) and then to Eon's non-entity
in-house clockpuncher, John Glen. And then, of course, Martin Campbell to the reboot-rescue.
(My own theory as to why nobody much cared for Dalton's brooding, angry, revenge fueled Bond....his performances were precision-tooled
Royal Shakespeare company outings...too calibrated, too precise and not much fun to watch.
Craig's brooding, angry revenge-fueled Bond is another animal altogether...a savage primitive who's slowly being humanized...you never know where his rage will take him...and that's compelling.)

I'm with Scott M. on this one all the way. I absolutely loved Timothy Dalton as Bond! "The Living Daylights" is now tied with "Casino Royale" as my fave. I'm so glad they have brought this series back from the lame.

Scott M and dukedog, i'm with you guys. The Living Daylights is the best Bond film ever. It's curious how Dalton's Bond hasn't been re-evaluated in the light of Craig's approach to the role. The Prater Cafe scene where 007's fellow agent is assassinated is absolutely sublime. Add some incredible action sequences, Dalton's ice-cold killer portrayal of Bond and the greatest John Barry Bond score ever and you have something approaching a minor masterpiece. Critics raved about it at the time but it seems sadly forgotten these days. It's certainly far superior to Casino Royale.

John Barry's Bond theme is the greatest movie music of all time; at least for me it is. Even when they try to make it "hip" by adding a hip hop beat to it as they did in some of the Brosnan films, it is fantastic. NEWSFLASH: the Bond theme is already hip as it is. It's got such an awesome 60s swing to it.

Can't wait. I haven't seen every Bond by any means, but liked most of them that I did see (save the last couple Brosnan ones).
Casino Royale was the first one I actually wanted to own on DVD though...if they continue in that direction (which they seem to be), then I can't effing wait for this.

I enjoyed Casino Royale enough that the least I can do is show up for one of the $5 matinees opening weekend at my local AMC. No popcorn or soda though-my moviegoer loyalty does have it's limits. Besides, if there's any truth to that Seymour Hersh New Yorker article, gas will be well north of $8 a gallon by opening weekend. We'll all be in desperate need of hollywood escapism at the movies under those circumstances.
T.S Idiot: First off, awesome posting name. As Jeff would say, hat's off. Second, if I had a bod like that I'd show up at my Fortune 100 job shirtless on casual dress fridays if I could get away with it.
If Craig has a personal trainer, I'm surprised he hasn't gotten the go-ahead for a diet/exercise book that he could write the forward to and call it the "007 Workout: How Daniel Craig got into killer shape" Might even inspire some of us to actually eat better and exercise.
Whoops. Gotto go. I have just enough time to finish these double stuff mint oreos before catching that movie on HBO.

I'd watch Craig play James Bond in a remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at this point. (Which isn't that far from a Bond film, after all. And Roald Dahl did work on You Only Live Twice...) I'm yet another Dalton fan... don't understand why some people have such dislike for him. TLD is in my top five Bond flicks (although I'd rank CR just a hair above TLD); Dalton was a great Bond.
The new teaser for QOS looks rather good as well... looking forward to Nov. 7.

The cool things about the clip are the look and the serious tone. In a few seconds of dialogue, you get the sense of real stakes in a way that Indiana Jones didn't generate once in two hours.

I had heard that the Bond producers tossed out their original script for Bond 22 (which they had touted back in Oct. 2005), and that they were trying to closely imitate the Bourne Ultimatum. But...wow...some of those scenes are almost direct lifts.
I guess it's also true that they've expanded Judi Dench's role, in an effort to turn her into Bond's version of Pamela Landy. I'm not sure I entirely agree with Bond being reduced to existing in the shadow of a rival series.
Anyway, put me down as another fan who enjoyed Dalton's take on the character. For my money, it's still the closest we've gotten to what Fleming had in mind. Dalton could not only be cold-blooded, but he was also a Bond that wouldn't look out of place at an opera.
As for the newly popular argument that Craig could take any of the other Bonds in a mythical matchup, I'm assuming this was started by fans that have never actually seen these actors in real life. Even today, Dalton is a far more imposing physical presence than Craig.
But I'm sure Brosnan does regret that he was never allowed to take Bond in this kind of direction. He practically begged the producers to take this approach for years, asking them to scale back the stunts and bad puns. Ironically, his constant requests for a more serious Bond are what led to his friction with the producers- and subsequent dismissal.

I believe they tried to get Martin Campbell back, but he declined.
I think the biggest mistake they made in the 90s was adopting the 'revolving directors' approach. In the past, each actor had been able to build a working relationship with one or two directors. But during the Brosnan years, there were simply too many people trying to go in a different direction.
So we got Roger Spottiswoode wanting to emphasize the action. Michael Apted trying to explore Bond's emotional side. And Lee Tamahori wanting the series to be more modern, with the producers agreeing to toss in a lot of excess cgi.
Personally, I enjoyed both Dalton and Brosnan as Bond. I'm not really crazy about the way it now seems fashionable to ridicule or discredit their contributions to the series. It's not as though any of the 007 actors have been responsible for penning their scripts.

Living Daylights is easily one of the best Bonds, but Licence to Kill is the only Bond I haven't been able to get through.
Dalton is terrific in Hot Fuzz. "Stop, or the ginger nut gets it" is one of the great lines of the century because of his delivery.

Add one more fan of the Dalton Bond films. While I agree Craig is a better actor than Dalton is, I think Dalton did a good job making the character more hard-edged, and less jokey. My only quibble with the above posters is I actually prefer LICENCE TO KILL to LIVING DAYLIGHTS; the former has better villains (Robert Davi and Benicio Del Toro) and a better Bond girl (Carey Lowell).
Having said all that, I'm not as much a Bond fan in general as the other people here, so while I thought Craig was terrific in CASINO ROYALE, and think Mathieu Amelric would make a good villain, I'm not going to rush to see it. I do hope Jeffrey Wright gets more screentime as Felix Leiter this time.

This has to be the highest per capita love for Timothy Dalton and The Living Daylights that I've ever seen on any Bond internet thread. Add me to the tally. Dalton and The Living Daylights - both severely underrated - rule. I'm usually much lonelier in that opinion.
That said, I'm excited about the new movie.
