Actually, it was much later than this in 2000 when the polls were heavily favoring Gore, and some commentators were writing stuff like, "Stick a fork in Bush, he's done, the election's over."
And if you want to go back even further: Look at the lead Dukakis had over Bush Sr. after the 1988 Democratic National Convention.
These national polls are just news filler. They are ultimately meaningless. Because of the way electoral votes break, it doesn't matter if Obama gets 47% of the vote vs. McCain's 41%. You can still lose the election with a 6% victory in the popular vote. Let's stop reporting (and digesting) fake news until reporters can have the decency to dig into the real story.
Joe: Well, technically, Gore won 2000, so they were right. And Dukakis was swift-boated. But there's too much hate against Bush II for an upset against Obama. Republicans are losing in places they normally are guaranteed wins, so McCain's definitely in hot water right now.

Why can't we just have the election next month? You know we're going to be subjected to 6 months of polls and it's getting tired already.
