Fantasy Moguls' Steve Mason is reporting that Kung Fu Panda is the weekend's #1 ass-kicker, having grabbed an estimated $17.75 million on Friday with a likely $55 million haul by Sunday night. Adam Sandler's You Don't Mess With The Zohan earned about $13.25 million and is looking at an estimated weekend take-down of $36.25 million. Sex and The City: The Abomination and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will apparently be duking it out for third place.

Hmm strange didnt hear much of ZOHAN, although the preimse seems funny - looks like another $120 million grosser for Sandler.
Just saw REIGN OVER ME on Bluray, good film with some solid performances, especially Sandler. I don't know how that one got lost in the shuffle.

"Sex & the City: The Abomination"? I haven't seen it yet but it's got to be better than "Crystal Skull."

Indy might actually just squeak under $300 million, since it dropped big again, this weekend - the competition is just too fierce and a lot of it is coming from films within the studio. I really have to wonder why Paramount did not give it more space - just two weeks after Iron Man and two weeks before Panda????? Seems like the studio was really boxing them in - does this mean Lucas and Steve no more?
SATC had the expected big drop-off, but will still end up in the mid-'20's, this weekend. I think $150 million is pretty solid.
At this point, I'm not sure whether Guru or Get Smart will not BOTH tank - I love Steve Carell and he seems to be a pretty solid draw (Evan Almighty STILL did $100 million and Dan in Real Life cracked $50 million), but it's like what Dave said a few years ago about Jim Carrey - this guy's budgets have to be constrained more. I figure Warners HAS to be spending over $100 million on Get Smart, just foolhardy.

Indy 4 had $230 million after Thursday. It'll add at least $20 million this weekend, giving it $250 million after only 18 days of release. It is a safe bet to breeze past $300 million.

'Sex and the City' is a much, much better film than Indiana Jones. Steve Carrell has shown very questionable taste in projects ever since 40 Year Old Virgin, alternating between big-budget studio junk and treacly pap like Little Miss Sunshine. Steve, you may want to think about actually being funny again at some point...

carell was excellent in little miss sunshine so I don't think that part was questionable taste on his behalf.

Even when his choices are terrible, Carell is always worth watching. (I feel the same way about The Rock.) Hell he was the only thing good enough in Bruce Almighty that they decided to make the sequel all about him. (Although, Evan Almighty manages to be both big budget studio junk AND Treacly pap, an impressive feat from the director of Patch Adams).

It was probably a Lucas ego thing more than a Paramount decision.
