The studio estimate I posted on Saturday morning for Hellboy II's opening weekend was $35 million and change. This estimate was made with a presumption that Saturday grosses for Guillermo del Toro's film would dip a bit on Saturday, as sequels tend to do. This is precisely what happened. After taking in $13.7 million on Friday, Hellboy II dropped to $11.7 million yesterday. GDT and Universal are savoring their first-place victory while it lasts, knowing that next weekend's box-office heat will be almost entirely about The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia!.

Don''t forget Space Chimps. I've already got my midnight Arclight Dome tickets for Thursday. The guy dressed in a full space suit, with a monkey mask, that'll be me.

Was Meet Dave that bad?
I had to see Space Chimps and it's probably one of the worst movie I have seen in 2 years.

Has anyone explored the possibility that Kung Fu Panda might end up with a larger haul than Wall-E?

This is why the net sucks. You guys are dissing a movie before you've ever seen it? What happened to giving things a fair shot?? The first draft of th script, before the monkeyed around with it, was effin' brilliant. I was disappointed that Aronofsky bailed on it after the studio forced him to change the ending, but even so, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Why don't you at least wait for Wells to review it before you jump on the trashwagon? Geez. Next thing you all will probably be pissing on Ingenious Batard, or whatever the hell QT is cooking up.

Wall-E, day 17 of release: $162.7 million
Kung-Fu Panda, day 17 of release: $155.8 million
Disney will keep Wall-E in theaters long enough to make sure it stays ahead of Panda's pace.

Mark: Kung Fu Panda's made double that amount world-wide. I was really getting annoyed with Dreamworks wise-cracking CG outings, but Katzenberg seems to have heard the complaints, and worked on the writing, while Pixar seems to have chosen to get political, to demonstrate it hasn't completely sold out to Disney.

I think I mentioned earlier that movie-goers were getting tired of Pixar, since they seem to be permanently stuck in that "immature character grows after a long journey" phase.

Just like everyone here's getting tired of you being permanently stuck in that "immature character NOT growing after a long journey."

What character grew after the long journey in Wall-E?
He was pretty "evolved" at the beginning. He just got what he always wanted. I guess I don't get this whole Pixar bashing vogue. Are you saying The Incredibles and Wall-E are indistinguishable from Toy Story and Nemo?

All snarkiness aside, DZ, remeber that it's the journey, not the destination, certainly not the reward either.
