Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Astute Analysis

Young Turks' Cenk Uygur on Crawford is/was a prop, Bush doesn't have the first clue, "Wall Street got drunk, needs to sober up," etc. The best part is a lecture to shitkicker voters, at the very end: Wealthy Republicans "are screwing you and having a great time doing it."

So many have had man crushes on this President. How many had man-crushes on Clinton? After Paul Begala and Lanny Davis? Not many.

Cenk Uygur rocks! Here's him taking apart a general who tried downplaying the importance of catching Bin Laden:

Wow, this guy is good.

He admits there are a lot of nuances, but he boils down a complicated issue into a common language that people can understand.

The Democratic Party could learn a lot from him. Republicans have succeeded on the theory that most Americans are stupid, intellectually lazy, and too busy trying to get by to pay attention to policy issues. So they get by on vapid, bumper-sticker sloganeering. By contrast, the Democratic Party has been afraid, heretofore, to tell the truth: that the real world is complicated. And sadly, few Democrats have the backbone (or the talent) to break down complicated issues like Uygur does here.

Thanks for posting this, Jeff. Very well put and something I wish many low-middle income people I know would grasp: If you're not mega-wealthy and vote Republican, you're an idiot.

Looking forward to seeing Huff Post blogger and fellow PA'er Bob Cesca on tonight's episode.

I'm becoming a real fan of Cenk. I think he and Maddow would be a fantastic tag team on MSNBC or something.

Journalist William Greider on Billy Moyer's Journal last week was explaining the subprime debacle and said Democrats where as much to blame as Republicans for the deregulation of the mortgage industry.

Dinther sums it up nicely. The real world is compicated.

Breaking down complex issues is what it takes. The average dude and dudette are too busy playing with guns, video games, ATV quads, and watching NASCAR to pay attention.

I don't want entitlements, just a fair chance and level field for everyone. That's impossible the way Wall Street and the insurance companies has things rigged.

To quote my friend Coach Al McGuire, "The Republicans will give you a straw hat in a snow storm."
