At Long Last
I finally got my hands on the Inglorious Bastards script earlier this afternoon. Two separate PDFs. A little humiliating to be the last one on the block, but looking forward to the read.

Fairly detailed script review here, with hilarious handwritten cover with misspelled title and some excerpts:
http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2008/07/weve_got_quentin_tarantinos_in.html
If real, seems like in the same vein of Kill Bill. Plot separated in chapters, one chapter in black in white, thought bubbles. Typical QT gimmicks, in short, a "movie world movie", if I remember QT's expression correctly.

Yeah, soon everyone and their dog will have this PDF, the tipping point doesn't seem too far off. The PDF will probably be on Scribd before the end of the weekend. I'm betting right here right now Pitt passes on Inglouirious Basterds. The few excerpts I've in the link above and on Lationo Review suggests a childish war fantasy silliness that I can't see Pitt wanting to be a part of. I know Pitt makes goofy leftfield choices every now and then, but these movies remain a bit mature or "manly" in spite of their silliness, as opposed to "childish" in this case. If that makes any sense.
Can't really argue my case in depth, just a gut feeling.

OK, I just spent about four hours reading this sucker. It's entertaining. I'll give it that. There are some fun twists, and some satisfying twists. And some great, nerve-racking set pieces. But I think Knowles is off-base (imagine that) on his gushing praise for this film. Quick criticisms: There's actually not enough Aldo, the VO narrator makes no sense as a device, and the female lead has too abrupt of a personality change for me, which lost me on her character. Like I said, though, there are 3-4 really tension-filled set pieces in this. Good stuff. I think Landa is the best character in the whole script, by far. He'll be fun to play. ... Putting Hitler in this, meanwhile, is going to be tough in a film with a QT tone and sensibility.

This process of reading the script and guessing the outcome of the final cut eminds me of a sardonic comment producer Saul David made in his book THE INDUSTRY re Pauline Kael reviewing an early cut of NASHVILLE; David compared this to "a basketball coach arriving at the maternity ward to pick out prospects."

You also have to ask why the Weinsteins sent the script to every studio when they planned to make it themselves. It was inevitable that the script would leak...they had to know that.
In my opinion: they just didn't care. Maybe they'd rather it leak now so everyone forgets about it by the time the film opens. If Harvey were smart: he should have hosted it on his own website and charged.

A Hogan's Heroes script is more authentic. "Heer" instead of "Herr?" I understand that this is the mighty QT, but if I'm going hunting for $100 million worth of a budget, why doesn't Harvey Scissorhands pull out a red pen and correct this stoner epic?

The reason the script was leaked is to create buzz and excitement amongst -- gasp! -- us movie nerds, coincidentally the target audience for QT's movies. After Grindhouse bombed they're going to need a lot of excitement to get this thing off the ground, especially if Harvey doesn't have the cash to pay for it himself.
I mean, do ya think Tarantino is courting Brad Pitt because he wants a good looking face? He needs a star with box office draw so he can get away with casting Bo Svenson and the like.

Thoughts on first reading... (MILD SPOILERS)
This script doesn't need to be 165 pages long. There quite a few scenes that, in classic Tarantino style, involve the characters rambling on in conversation for longer than is necessary to make the point. This worked fine in Pulp Fiction, but Kill Bill has pretty much exhausted my enthusiasm for it. Several scenes could also be folded into others (the two Shoshanna/Frederick scenes for starters).
There is also too little time spent with the Basterds (sic). Only Aldo and Donowitz are really developed to the point where we care. Too may characters are introduced and then bumped off very quickly (shades of Desperado, of all things). There are some very tense moments in the script however, and the main idea is a great one. It does read a little Kill Bill to me - especially the sections in different colours, the chapters, etc. However that's not a compliment.
Like other commenters I wonder what QT is thinking by putting Hitler and other real figures in (Churchill seems totally perfunctory). Not to get into the details of the climax, but actual historical fact is pretty much taking a massive dick-slapping from this movie. But then, that's probably Quentin's aim!
And regarding Harry Knowles' rave review... madness.

this kind of stylized, circular dialogue is exhausting. I thought it was cool when I was 14 and crushed that Pulp Fiction lost to Forrest Gump... 15 years later, not so cool.
Tarantino's best work in the last 20 years was the altercation he got into with that paparazzo outside starbucks. Comedic gold.
I didn't mean to impugn anyone by saing *I'm* not interested in this, but clearly some people have bigger voids to fill in their lives than others and took it personally....so enjoy living vicariously through QT and may you have beautiful children.

So does the script sound like something that would have come out of WWII-era? Because the last half of DEATH PROOF was pretty much women yelling profanity rather than actual dialogue, and Tarantino still doesn't seem to be able to write characters who don't drop the F-bomb every other word. Not to say that there wasn't plenty of salty language in WWII, only that it would be nice if a WWII movie sounds like it. This is a (not "the") difference between someone like PT Anderson, who is notoriously foul-mouthed IRL but can write scripts like Punch-Drunk Love and There Will Be Blood, and QT.

J.Huff, I found the profanity surprisingly reserved.
Language-wise, some of this could have happened in WW2. (Although there are a few over-the-top QT speeches that don't exist anywhere but in QT films)
Plot-wise, none of this could have happened in WW2. It's a pure-fantasy, 2008 take on WW2 from a director who has absorbed three generations worth of WW2 epics (mostly the cheesier ones)
(And I don't necessarily mean that as a 100 percent good thing.)

This is a 90 minute movie. It'd be a fun thrill ride if they cut down the scenes that go as long as a Saturday Night Live sketch. The Basterds are such minor characters that I almost forgot they were in the film.
It's a Hogan's Heroes episodes that went out of control. It's an Ann Frank revenge flick. I pity any studio executive who has to ponder buying it. There's material to work with - but Tarantino won't be letting them alter his bloated vision. Two movies? No. I wouldn't pay to see the first half of this film.

I'd say it's the equivalent of Sergio Leone doing a western; not being influenced by the actual wild west period, but by all the classic western movies that had come before, which is cool in my book.

This isn't that epic. There's very few locations. How many real scenes are there? How long can the bar scene go on before you want to just want to scream at the screen "get on with the move!" The action scenes are really spaced apart. The Basterds exploits come off like Three Stooges routines (which is proper since they were a crack Jewish unit that tangled with Hitler).
Corman could have bashed this out in two weeks.

Yes, the bar scene is waaaaaaaaaaay too long, and filled with protagonists who have not had significant (if any!) screen time up to that point. For a set piece of that length, we need characters we're invested in. It's going to have to be rewritten to put Aldo front and center, I think, and not just a guy who comes in after (most of) the smoke has cleared. I do like the character of the German movie starlet, though. In fact I like that character even more than I like Shoshanna.

The script is wonderful. It's riveting, it's completely absorbing, it's hysterically funny, it's heartbreakingly sad, it's simply a fantastic read.
A couple things...
Comparing this to a film like Downfall....please, don't do that. This film is not like that in any way, shape, or form. There is a wonderful little device deployed very late in the script that reminds the audience of this exact idea.
This script is clever as hell. This is unlike anything Quentin has done to this point. The set pieces are all outstanding, one after the other, and the degree of tension that builds is amazing.
I would love to see this film as written. This is some brilliant stuff. The twists in this are righteous; in a way it's a shame that this is out there, because there are surely elements in the story that will be leaked out due to their content (let's just leave it at that).
The Kill Bill script that was floated online ended up being far from what we saw on the screen, so I'd anticipate a similiar thing with this, QT probably has many changes in mind that were not included with what we're seeing here (him calling it the "last" draft is a nice touch.
One other thing: focusing on the typos and misspellings in this script are unbelievably wrong headed. There is so much hate out there. How many scripts do people clamor to see like this one? Think about it for a minute; was there this kind of excitement to see the script of No Country, or There Will Be Blood, or Che, or Batman Begins? Not even close. People are looking for any reason at all to bring the guy down. It's ridiculous.
This immediately jumps to the forefront of films I'm most looking forward to seeing...

You either love him, or hate him. I'm in the camp that loves him. But either way, he gets people talking about and debating films. Few others can do that.
