Birth of the Bat

Holy fruit salad! A recollection by "Reel Geezer" Lorenzo Semple, Jr. about banging out scripts for the old Adam West Batman TV series. "Days of innocence, days of Andalusian heaven!"

A timely interview, considering they just released the 1966 Batman feature film to Blu Ray(!)

Interesting how original Semple's approach was at the time. It wasn't so much subverting a serious Batman as it was plucking comedy from its cartooniness so that adults would find it funny in a way that passed over kids' heads.

Can we acknowledge how sad it is that the ads for the '66 BATMAN are selling it to match the darkness of the new film series? "Even the Darkest Knights shine bright" or something.

Sad? Really? I thought it was pretty funny. The first time I saw one I didn't immediately realize what it was until I discovered it was West instead of Bale wearing the cowl.

It's a shame FOX and WB can't settle their dispute over the series, so it can finally be on dvd...

Just spent a week in Karlovy Vary with Lorenzo who has to be one of the coolest, sharpest liveliest fellows I've had the pleasure to hang out with. He and Marcia Nasatir have their great "Geezers" show and they're both extremely forward-looking, creative and focused on the now and future. HOWEVER, his tales of working for Dino DeLaurenttis and the studios and the stars of the so-called "New Hollywood" are worth putting into a book and Lorenzo is the guy who could write it.

The screening of "Pretty Poison" (which he wrote) went over like gangbusters with the kids in K.V. Perfect print. Haven't looked at the new DVD yet. Hope it rocks. Anyway, I hope this piece on "Batman" is only the first of many pieces he'll write for us. There's gold in them thar geezers!!!!!!
