Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008)
Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves'
Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign,
Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the
Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered:
Cloverfield was a major success.

Great photo, it's good to have a friend. MIne would sit on top of my computer monitor (nice and warm) and when she decided I had been playing with it instead of her too long, grab my head with her claws.

I must admit when i first started coming here a year ago and I would see these kinds of personal posts among movie analysis, I would find it very odd and head-scratching, but now I find it super endearing.

Tell you this from 28 years of cat ownership...
...don't ever believe the conventional garbage
about cats being aloof, unfriendly and snobblish.
Once they bond with you, they'll follow you around like any puppy dog...and if you're too
distracted to pet them, they'll just stick their heads under your hand and do it themselves. And
wait'll you get a load of the maternal "kneeding"
thing they do while in your lap. Enjoy the love.

Beautiful kitten. One question: does Mouse have a "kink" in his tail? Some Siamese are born with strangely-fused bones in their tails that form a kink or change of direction in the end of the tail. It's genetic and completely harmless, but makes them even more unique. I once had a Siamese whose tail formed a "z" at the end.

Cute cat. I'd consider buying one if my lungs didn't collapse, eyes didn't turn red, and my nose didn't turn into a faucet every time I've spent time in a cat owner's home.

Monument, you should consider a short-haired cat breed, without a topcoat. Like Siamese or cornish Rex. They barely shed and most people with cat allergies aren't bothered by them. Plus, they have great personalities -- especially the Cornish Rex. (Obviously, I'm biased.)

Good to know Bilge. I normally keep Claritin in stock just so I can visit my friends with cats, it's my only allergy. I have a friend with a Siamese, I'll have to go drug free sometime and see how I do.

Wells to Mr. Gittes: Someone who works and operates in Lubezki's realm shot the photos -- Svetlana Cvetko. Her use of a highly unusual, super-wide aspect ratio on the lensing of a short film, "On a Tuesday," is profiled in the new American Cinematographer, starting on page 16.

I'm the catnip connection for a friend in California - must not grow out there. You ever want the real thing, give me a shout. You might want to get Mouse a friend too, and raise 'em up together.
We have three ourselves right now, the Righteous Queen, Squirrel, and Ringo The Almighty Mouse Champion. A home isn't a home without a furred up friend...well, not for us anyway. I feel badly for people that want pets and can't because of allergies, that must suck.

Another option is to consider being a foster dad to a kitten or couple of kittens. In general people with cat allergies are not allergic to kittens during the first 4 months of life (it's true!). I ran the world's largest cat adoption organization and sanctuary and we would have as many as 500 kittens in foster care at a time in the summer; it became a great option for people who were either allergic to cats or didn't want a long term commitment. I don't know where you live, but I can guarantee you that a local shelter in your area has a foster care program looking for people to take one to 6 kittens for short-term care (often just socialization) until the kitten is old enough to be altered and then adopted. The commitment runs from just a few days to as much as a month. Consider checking it out...

I remember years ago Wells ran a story about the attitudes of cat owners vs dog owners and the opposing virtures of the animals themselves.
I was firmly in the dog camp - not only that but vigorous anti-cat and anti-cat owner. Serial killers of the animal world I believe I called cats (ouch)...
But in the past 2 years I've gotten to know several cats very well and have completely changed my tune - I think cats are amazing, loving and personality laden animals that have gotten a bad rap because they aren't as obviously needy and obsequious like dogs (don't get me wrong - still LOVE dogs but cats are a more mysterious and therefore intriguing animal).
There's my girlfriend's tabby, Dave, who is the most talkative animal I've ever met - he has about 25 different vocalizations that always perfectly capture his emotion and intent. He knows exactly one human word: tuuuuuuna!
And there's Dante - a skinny, grey 15 yr old mongrel who is the terror of her neighborhood and she has the harshest, meaning sounding meow on the surface but is really a total sweetheart.

What an adorable cat...and its name reminds me of a '60s pop song (the title of which I can't recall) in which the (female) singer referred to "me and my cat named Dog."
And speaking of dogs (which I also adore), did anyone see the USA Weekend story last week about how inferior cat healthcare is to dog care? Apparently pop culture perceptions of the two species have a lot to do with it, although it claimed the cartoon cat Felix was "sneaky, unpredictable." Anyone who's seen the great Otto Messmer cartoons from the 1920s (when Felix was beloved by millions) would agree on the latter, but definitely not the former.
