Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

The somewhat pretentious-sounding Vietnam movie being made in Tropic Thunder -- the one starring the characters played by Ben Stiller, Robert Downey, Jr., Jack Black, et. al. -- is called Rain of Madness, which has an obvious Joseph Conrad-ian ring. Here's a promotional website that includes a trailer and (I think, have been told, haven't found) a kind of mockumentary about the making of it.

Jeff, if you look more closely at the site, you'll see that "Rain of Madness" is the name of the faux documentary, about the making of the film "Tropic Thunder." Clearly based on the "Hearts of Darkness"/"Apocalypse Now" model.

Also, click on the "MY FAVORITE CHARITY" link on the Tugg Speedman site.

God help me, that first image made me laugh my ass off.

They also have official sites for Tugg Speedman (www.TuggSpeedman.com) and Kirk Lazarus (www.KirkLazarus.com). It's a great viral campaign.

How is it that the poster for "Rain of Madness" looks more like a Vietnam war movie parody that I would rather see than the screeching, "Look, we make a funny!" poster for TROPIC THUNDER.

Hell, even the title is more appealing.

Some of the (obviously planted) comments to the blog posts are pretty funny, too.

Pretty clever PR campaign if you ask me. I hope Tropic is as funny as it looks. After TDK, and listening to John McCain, I could use a good comedy.

At some point, I'd like to see someone actually make the movie inside a movie and release both.

Theatrically or on video? If the latter is okay, look no further than Joe Dante's terrific Matinee and its movie-within-a-movie Mant. Sadly, I think it's out of print right now. But it's well worth tracking down.
