Disease...What?

"Now a revered commodity thanks to The Office and Extras, Ricky Gervais is making a rare journey to the U.S. to do standup," writes Variety's Phil Gallo. "A precision-oriented writer with well-oiled timing, Gervais instead goes deep into non-politically correct territory, riffing on autistic kids, the Holocaust, AIDS and gay sex, diseases and the pervy behavior of his schoolmates, the belly laughs shifting around the Kodak Theater as nerves are struck. On his opening night in the States, Gervais' no-nonsense approach hit every bull's eye."

Are Americans not familiar with the term "pervy"?

I think Gervais is a genius, but while his stand-up is very funny he's certainly not one of the greats. He has some great material and fantastic timing, but it feels more like he's delivering a humorous lecture than doing stand-up.

I'd say he is one of the greats. Saw this at the Albert Hall and was in hysterics. The humerous lectures were more Animals and Politics. Fame was definitely stand-up, although I don't even think there's much difference. If a guy on stage makes you laugh, it is stand up comedy.

From the Variety review, it seems his US tour will be a hybrid of this 3 UK shows.

The Office (UK) is the greatest television show of the past 10 years, in my opinion.

The trailer for Ghost Town looks amazing, there's something very classic about it. Although Greg Kinnear does give it that As Good as it Gets vibe. Gervais looks hilarious in it.

One of the downsides to being a struggling actor in LA is I couldn't afford to see Gervais over the weekend. He's reliably funny. This is a favorite of mine:

Buy or try to find his podcasts with Steven Merchant (spelling?) and their old producer Carl Piklington (spelling? again). Funniest shit ever!

I assume you're talking about comedy shows, and I almost agree. But Peep Show is the ultimate comedy show these days, so far beyond anything else it's almost depressing. The audacity of making a sit-com with only Lady In The Lake-like POV-shots is only the beginning. The timing, characters and themes are beyond brilliant and the fact that each episode would make the viewer want to commit suicide by the end if they weren't so disturbingly funny makes it raise the bar from The Office

He did this same bit in Grand Theft Auto 4 :) Still funny though. Was this recorded for an upcoming HBO special?

I saw Ricky do one of his warm-up shows last Thursday night at The Brentwood Theater, and he did this obesity bit, although without the overt British references (stone, Johnny Vegas). My understanding is that one or both of the Kodak Theater shows from last Friday and Saturday were taped for HBO. He was charming - but it was clearly a triumph of personality over material. Wonderful - but not ground-breaking.

That clip was garbage. Fat jokes? Really?

I fear he's lost it. The series finale of Extras was a self-indulgent piece of crap.

This from a person who thought The Office was just about the greatest thing since Shakespeare!
