In his brief New York magazine review of Mamma Mia!, David Edelstein says that Pierce Brosnan's singing "is the best imitation I've heard of a water buffalo." As long as actors singing dreadfully is on the table, I should mention Frances Farmer's crooning of "Aura Lee" in Come and Get It! ('36). Her contralto sounds a cross between a seal and a loon. It may seem unkind to mention this, given Farmer's tragic life and all, but I've had this thought in my head for ages.
Elvis Presley's "Love Me Tender," of course, uses the exact same melody.

I was expecting something really awful. She's not a singer, but pulled it off pretty well, considering her character is a prostitute (I'm assuming, since I've never seen the film) it worked for me in context. But why did she have to sing another chorus?

For some reason, her singing performance reminded me a bit of Madeline Kahn in Blazing Saddles. I know that Marlene Dietrich was the big inspiration for her character in the film but I wonder if Kahn saw this performance and was influenced at all by it.

For me, the king of terrible movie singers is still Gerald Butler, who absolutely botched Phantom Of The Opera in every imaginable way. That he wasn't even a compelling dramatic actor made it more inexplicable. Brosnan's singing has its issue (I kinda liked his 'I know I can't sing that well, but I'm just going for it' gusto), but he delivers the acting goods to compensate.

"Water buffalo?" Usually Edelstein is better than that. Total cliche.
He could have said a hundred other things, like: Brosnan sounds like he got his vocal training from Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood.
The floor is open. I encourage you to be mean.

I talk to the trees
But they don't listen to me
I talk to the stars
But they never hear me
What was amazing about Clint Eastwood singing in Paint Your Wagon is that he just came off of making all his Sergio Leone movies, plus Hang 'Em High, Coogan's Bluff, and Where Eagles Dare. It wasn't as if the poor guy was desperate for work.

Good god, you're telling me the guy in the jockstrap in 300 also starred in Phantom of the Opera? How gay is that?

Hey, it was 1969, going from an Italian western to a Joshua Logan musical was going from the minors to the majors. He could have been the next Julie Andrews!

No one's mentioning Burt Reynolds and Cybill Shepherd in AT LONG LAST LOVE? Now that was pain-inducing.
And I agree with the others here; Farmer might not have been a singer per se, but she wasn't bad. Of course, I really like her in that movie.

I still cringe when I remember Butler's kamikaze,
jump-the-shark,nuke-the-fridge, love-guru-meet-dave -speed-racer stab at a high note in Phantom. That took way more guts than fighting off 10,000 leather
bar Persians or pretending Hilary Swank was
was some kind of cute romantic catch.
But truly, as others have pointed out,
Bogdonovich's "At Long Last Love" is the
ultimate Temple Of Doom for this kind of singing.
Instead of pre-recording, he had the actors sing
the songs live on the set.....creating a perfect
off-key storm that finally deflated his dirigible-sized ego and derailed his A-list director career.
