Great photo... but how was Horsey able to actually photograph their dialogue bubbles?

The fact that the worst person the illustrator could think of to put on a portrait was Dick Cheney (whereas Obama has a picture of Osama bin Laden) makes this an unintentional self-parody in addition to a parody or a parody. How about, I don't know, Hitler or someone? That is unless the cartoonist is trying to mock the Left for putting Cheney on the same pedestal as the right puts OBL on.

The original cartoon was kind of funny. It made it's point the day it came out judging from the wild schizo reaction.

Some will probably consider this a 'wild schizo reaction', but Toles cartoon for today nails it...

This notion that, at 72, John McCain must be on the verge of senility makes as much sense as if everyone were mocking Obama as being, at 46, obsessed with dating, staying out late and pimple cream.

He's a year older than Jack Nicholson. Should Jack Nicholson be in the rest home?

Meanwhile, my New Yorker, which usually arrives on Monday, hasn't come yet. Postal incompetence, theft, censorship, conspiracy?

When McCain is ciompared to Osama for a pop-culture reference then I'll say things are even. So far nobody's decided he, or any other Republican, is game for that, even though the GOPer's have undermined the coutnry in ways that Osama would envy.

Anybody who wants to minimize the significance of the New Yorker cover must be someone who agrees with it's inference. What's next, will somebody who says "You the Man" be accused of terrorism? Whatever New Yorker editor okayed that crap should be fired.

mgmax - I agree that MCain does not appear to be on the verge of senility, but are you actually suggesting Jack Nicholson is a typical septogenerian??

The reality is that a 70+ year old running for president is relatively exceptional, and since you have to be at least 40 to run, a 46 year old is relatively young. Whether those things should be an issue is another matter.

It's not an unfair characterization that McCain might be senile at 72 when he keeps making such 'old man', what day is it again, comments.

Like, oh, I dont know...referring to the non-existent country of Czechoslovakia twice in two days.

According to the Constitution, you only have to be 35 to run for President. Just for the record.

So what is it when Obama says we need more Arabic translators in Afghanistan?

You should be so sharp at 72. Whether that qualifies you for the presidency, is a fair question, but the man is obviously a long ways from being incapable for it.

seeing how a majority of Bin Laden's crew is made up of arabic speakers, it wouldn't hurt.

McCain can't even remember what he's said in the past. Of course we can always blame it on him having to constant be a product tester at his wife's beer distributorship. "Let me tell you....."

And shouldn't Ho Chi Min be in the portrait since he was called "the Manchurian candidate" around Rove's office in 2000.

Mgmax, I'm not sure people reference McCain's "senility" because of his age, per se. There are plenty of octogenerians who are whip-sharp (e.g., if you've ever heard Justice Stevens talk from extemporaneously, without notes, no matter who you are, you feel stupid).

The issue goes to McCain himself. If you've listened to him speak (where he is not speaking via teleprompter, and sometimes, even when he is) - and I mean in more than sound bites on TV - he seems to lose focus and drift off into extraneous subject matter. It's like when Grandpa answers your question about the weather with ambulatory musings about the cost of a lollipop during World War II. And the reason doubts about McCain's mental wherewithall keep propping up is that he didn't used to speak like this. Earlier in his career, he was a sharp, compelling speaker. And now, there are some pretty clear warning signs that his mental acuity is in sharp decline.

You guys have missed the boat completely.

The entire point of David Horsey's fake National Review cover is that it is a grotesquely unfair caricature of McCain and his wife. Just like the real New Yorker cover is a grotesquely unfair caricature of Obama and his wife.

That said, this poster is pretty funny (and not at all grotesque or unfair):

I dunno. How about drawing exaggerations of politicians which don't focus on how they look? I mean like those over-sized Bush ears you see in newspaper cartoons. The New Yorker just seems to be aiming for the lowest common denominator, and I know they can to better.

Frankbooth wins.

Feel free to run the election on how 72-year-olds with concrete, recent legislative records are out of it compared to 46-year-olds with no accomplishments on their resumes. That should go over real well with all the older women pissed about Hillary getting her due stolen by a younger man.
