Lies and Sand

A new trailer for Ridley Scott's Body of Lies (Warner Bros., 10.10) -- clearly a first-rate thing about a CIA/Middle East/war-on-terror type deal. A tense, antagonistic partnership between pudged-up Russell Crowe (as a senior-level strategist) and bearded Leonardo DiCaprio (as some kind of agent-operator). Whatever happened to that announcement about changing the title to House of Lies? History, I guess. "Rock out on me...know what that means?" Looks a bit more like a Tony Scott film than a Ridley.

Scott is quoted on the Body of Lies Wikipedia page as saying "it's about Islam, where we are and where we're not, and it's a very interesting, proactive, internalized view of that whole subject."

Somewhere, J.T. Walsh is smiling at Russell Crowe. I'm sure it's good, but what the hell is up with that trailer music? It reminded me of "The Condemned."

Why is Jeff's ultimate praise for a movie calling it a "thing"? Whenever he likes something, he says it's a "disciplined thing" or a "well-honed thing." Not criticizing, just wondering...

Based solely on the trailer, DiCaprio looks wholly out of place. Will he turn in a "good" performance? Yes, probably; he's a damn good actor. But I'm tired of the tough guy shtick DiCaprio has been doing since Gangs of New York. Yes, we get it - you're not just a pretty boy actor, you're to be taken seriously, and we are. But it's getting old, Leo.

DiCaprio needs to do a dark comedy or something - something other than this, " I can't do this anymore!" thing. Didn't he say that in The Departed, too?

Now, perhaps I'll be eating my own words once Revolutionary Road comes out(maybe) but I'm getting tired of Leo's acting -- that beard is ridiculous.

A supporting nom for Crowe?

Both SCOTTS own your ass, but that's very obviously a Ridley because of the color palette -- that purple-green "aqua" shade used in most of the Crowe interiors is a Ridley hallmark -- total GIJANECAM/White Squal-look to those shots; And the sandy brown-tinted exteriors is way, WAY more Rid (1492, Black Hawk Down) than Tony.

Maybe it's just my fascination with both brothers, but I think any eagle-eyed film fan can look at any shot in this trailer and match it to look a shot or lens filter from a previous Ridley movie. Aside from the rooftops (very Spy Game) and the techno-surveillance fetish, I don't really see how you'd mistake it for a Tony.

Will add it's nice to see Ridley back to his usual style after the brown, muted, 1.85:1 restraint of American Gangster; I get what he was going for shooting that as such (paying homage to French Connection, Superfly, Serpico, Godfather), but I had expected a large-canvassed, Scarfacian widescreen epic, only to find a master director toning down his entire visual arsenal.

Not familiar with the source material, and I think it looks like the pretentious Dark City version of Fantastic Four, at least based on that ad.

The two main things I liked were the Billy Corgan song and the chick in leather (Malin Akerman with black hair?) Other than that it looked generic, C-list, and typically Snyder-stagy.

Rothchild,
Absolutely agree. Outside of those two heli-shots, there is nothing Tony-ish about it. Remember, we're looking at a TRAILER. And you could cut Barry Lyndon to make it FEEL like The Hunger if you wanted... wait a minute, wasn't that Tony Scott doing Stanley Kubrick? Or maybe The Duellists. Wansn't that Ridley doing Stanley. Or Lolita, Adrian Lyne doing... hang on. Just how many Brit directors have done their own Stanley movies?
But seriously, the trailer gives the VIBE of Spy Game but as Ridley himself once said, "Tony is more rock 'n' roll and I'm more classical."

I've never cared for the "adult" Leo. Talented actor, but this trailer really hit me: He's got a kid's voice. Sounds about 18, still. He can scowl all he wants, and grow the macho-ugly beard (again), but that reedy, youthful voice remains the deal-breaker for me. Compare it to Depp's (another former teen pretty-boy with real talent): Could you imagine Leo's voice in any mature Depp performance, from HST to Jack Sparrow to Sweeney Todd, etc.?

Crowe could do a lot worse than channeling J.T. Walsh. Damn, I miss that man. He was really on to something.

And with 300, as with the graphic novel, the film is a visionary artistic achievement that not many people could have pulled off. I loved it. There is nothing "soft-core-gay" about it. It's a thrilling action movie. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'm really sick of people trashing on DiCaprio. How is it a 33 year old gets three Oscar nominations but he's miscast in everything he does? So he looks young. He's 33! How old are you supposed to look at 33? Of course he looks like a kid to Crowe. He is a kid to Crowe -- Crowe's a decade older!

I have no idea how good this movie will be but I really get sick of the comments about DiCaprio -- who I consider an excellent actor and who isn't afriad to try to do things outside of the box most moviegoing morons want to put him in (like some other "pretty boy" actors).

And while you've got me riled up, let me ask -- how many Bourne movies is Damon going to do to prove he's no pretty boy? And how many times do I need to see Depp as a pirate?

Sorry, boys, but get over your jealousy about Dicaprio. What, did your girlfriends like looking at their "Titanic" posters more than you?

By the way, the movie was written by William Monaghan, so if it seems like "The Departed" -- blame him, not DiCaprio.
