Why doesn't Wild Bunch make this trailer available with English subtitles? Why isn't there a bi-lingual Guerilla trailer? What's the deal with Gregg Goldstein's mention in the Hollywood Reporter about "four indie offers being on the table" and still no distrib deal? The possibility that Steven Soderbergh's epic (which has had 14 minutes trimmed since Cannes) may not even play commercially until '09 is ridiculous. What kind of a plastic, quarter-inch-deep moviegoing culture are we to have convinced distributors that buying Che rights is a sucide move?

Would you put up millions of your own dollars to distribute a 4 hour long, foreign language film about a politcally radical, polarizing figure that has received many negative reviews?
Personally, I'm happy we live in a time where there's enough technology that, theatrical release or not, I'll still eventually get to see it.

What he said. Wells, I want to see this movie as badly as the next filmfan, even if SS does gloss over the important fact that Che was a mass murdering scumbag. That being said, again, no one is going to put up millions of dollars to distribute because people aren ot gonig to pay the millions to come watch a 4 hour non english film. Sorry, but it AIN'T gonna happen here. Yeah, I'm sure to see it somehow, someday.

All right, now I'm interested. Release them separately, this one for this fall's race. Looks to be the more commercial of the two.

If that's for a stultifyingly dull, near-unwatchable drama they put the best trailer-cutter in the biz on this.

The market for films that aren't big, dumb or big & dumb is dead. This summer hasn't been kind - there's no sleeper/under the radar hit. Carpetbomb marketing or suffocate.
Why take a risk on a film like this? The audience for a film like this has retreated from the cineplex and even the arthouse. This just looks like something people are more likely anticpating as a special edition DVD with all those bonus feature documentaries.

i like the idea of a limited release in december and individual releases in january and february. benicio del toro's performance as been raved about and the flim looks to be exquisitely shot. this movie needs to be picked up and seen this year so we can see what mr. soderbergh as accomplished, especially since the two ocean's movies were disappointing, although bubble was a pleasant reminder of soderbergh's talent.

This is the kind of movie that would do gangbusters Worldwide, in the way Pssion of the Christ did. I imagine generating a lot of interest (obviously) in Latin America and other "more educated" European countries.

On a related note, "Battle in Seattle" poster, via DH. http://www.impawards.com/2008/battle_in_seattle_ver2.html
EOTW: "Wells, I want to see this movie as badly as the next filmfan, even if SS does gloss over the important fact that Che was a mass murdering scumbag."
Conservatives seem to gloss over Bush murdering one million Iraqis, and Nixon's bombing of Cambodia, so...
Anyway, if that boring Hunter S. Gump doc got picked up, I don't see why no one can take a chance on Che. Hell, no moviegoer cared about "Factory Girl", "I'm Not There", or "Steal This Movie", but studios took a chance on those.
