Some people live in perpetual ecstasy over box-office numbers, to the extent that they sometimes get so fired up about the rightness of their readings that they summon the wrath of the God of Abraham to punish those they disagree with. I read their stuff with some interest, but not all that much. At root, it's a dweeb thing.

As most of these discussions tend to do, this one completely ignores the variable of inflation. Not only do I not give a damn about what movie makes the most money, but I certainly am not going to get fired up over a competition that isn't even on a level playing field.

Ah, I stand corrected. There is a one-sentence acknowledgment of that factor.
"Ticket price creep can push that further."
But that doesn't make the race any less uninteresting and meaningless to me.

Poland is just chapped he was wrong. He downplayed the opening weekend box office the whole week before because Nikki Finke kept hyping the shit out of it. Those two should get a room.

Some people might suggest that such name calling practically begs some people to wonder if that would that be like saying that constant celebrity gossip is a closet case thing or issues with the fantasy genre a crotchety old man thing?
Some people, mind you, not me. I know better than to have the stones to point these things out.

I don't see any problem with a movie blogger being obsessed with movie numbers.
What I can't stand is when regular folk with no connection to the biz start talking about "cumes" and opening weekends, like it has any effect whatsoever on them. If you like a movie, why worry about how much it makes? It came out, and you dig it. Great.
I suppose if something you hate becomes a phenomenon, that can be annoying, much like the way I felt about Gladiator.

But there's also the mentality of "If it's a hit, it must be good and I've got to see it so I won't be left out of a conversation about it."

Or the way I feel about HANCOCK.

LYT, we disagree twice. Box office is one way for the folks at home to keep score. I started following it as the way to know if my favorite movies will get a sequel or not. Knowing the numbers gives one insight, same as in sports if you understand the salaries and team budgets you will know if your favorite player will be around for a few years or get traded.
And Gladiator is pretty cool.
