Cross to Bear

For those who haven't seen Marina Zenovich's Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, it's playing in New York (at the Quad Cinema on West 13th Street), and will open Friday in Boston and Los Angeles. If you haven't yet seen this essential and riveting legal drama, here's another way.

It's been on HBO, but I first saw it at a theatre in Park City, Utah, last January, and I got a bit more of a jolt from the communal experience (leaning forward in my seat, sensing the concentration of others) than from the HBO viewing that I allowed myself two or three weeks ago. This is a very sharp and absorbing doc that doesn't miss a trick, and which leaves you filled and fortified. Before seeing anything like this I always go to the club for the treadmill and weights, and then I'll down a Red Bull and a double cappuccino kicker. Docs always play better when you're cranked.

I wonder how many of the hellfire-and-brimstone Polanski haters who visit this site have seen it?

please better explain the hoopla about this flick. the judge in the case obviously cared more about the perception of justice rather than justice, but attempts to make him some kind of villain fell on deaf ears, imo. especially when the purported nefarious actions of the judge are preceded by qualude-granted child rape and Charles fucking Mason.

Besides recalling what a goddess Sharon Tate was, and the tragedy of her end, i came away with little more than had i spent 3 minutes looking up the subject on wiki.

when something falls on deaf ears, it means people ignored it. it's not really a matter of opinion. i think you mean you weren't convinced, but I would argue that when a defense attorney and his opposing council (a Mormon ADA no less) band together because of a judge's unusual, self-centered and illegal behavior ... that's a good sign that judge is screwing up the process of justice.

Also, I'm not sure what Charles Mason has to do with it. He was a good guy. There's a crater on the moon named after him ....

Misspelled. I meant Jackie Mason, the awful comic.

I just wasn't that outraged by the actions of the judge. And the whole 2nd half mainly entails interview from two lawyers, and Ms. Geimer, who spoke in the presence of her lawyer following a private civil suit. you don't tend to learn much about the human condition from the carefully parsed words of laywers.

anyone else in the UK just watch 'Stanley Kubrick's Boxes'?

It was fascinating....there were a few gems, like a screen test for Lolita, still pictures of costume tests for Clockwork Orange, and the best bit was hours of behind the scenes footage of the Full Metal jacket set. The stuff was hilarious, with Kubrick arguing with the english crew about how many tea breaks they are having.

the man was an obsessive, that is clear, but maybe now we can see why........

You get all caffeined-up to sit down and watch a documentary? You are a strange cat, Jeffrey Wells.

Joncro:

I just watched the "making of" Aliens doc, and Cameron was none too fond of the tea break himself. Which I found especially funny, because Ridley Scott had issues with his L.A. crew's work ethic on Blade Runner.

The Kubrick stuff sounds great.

Joncro:

Yeah the Kubrick documentary was excellent, especially the behind the scenes on Full Metal Jacket footage, great to see some new footage of Kubrick after all these years. I loved the story of how the box suppliers labelled him as a "fussy customer" - great stuff!

I thought this movie was pretty boring when I saw it on HBO, but I have to admit that I'm extremely amused that it's theatrical run is taking place in the old converted porno theater on 13th street.
