San Diego Blahs

A geek dad in a monster outfit hanging with a toddler...right. A variation on the generic Comic-Con photo that runs in the N.Y. Times each and every year. I'm not putting the practice down. I would run this photo (or one like it) if I'd been asked to decide which photo would best go with this Michael Ceiply story about Frank Miller talking about directing The Spirit, which we all know will be trotting out the same Frank Miller routine -- high-style CG noir mixed with tough talk, slinky dames and ripe sensuality.

THE SPIRIT looks like a completely lame movie.

And why would you dress up as Ghost Rider?

“If I didn’t do it, somebody else was going to do it, and something very bad could happen,” Mr. Miller told about 6,500 listeners in one of the convention’s big halls. - NY Times.

"At that very bad thing is someone else pissing all over Will Eisner's grave instead of me, Frank Miller, the Jesus of comics" he added. "I guess what I'm trying to say is, I want to make an even shitter version of Sin City because that movie really held up well after barely three years didn't it?"

Miller co-directs one movie that was someone else's idea to film, and yet he already has a "routine"?

Not that I'm exactly drooling at the prospect of The Spirit, but fair's fair.

I used to attend the SDCC as a kid. I enjoyed it as a twelve-year-old. Have I gotten older or has our culture gotten pre-pubescent? Why is this such a big deal? What happened to the good old days of Hal Ashby and Alan Pakula? I wonder what a Hal Ashby 'Batman' would have been like? Or what about Monte Hellman's 'Iron Man'? Would have been really cool, eh? How about we get Francis Coppola to do the new 'X-Men'? What about if we all dress up as Ewoks? Is there a coupon I can cut from my cereal box? It's been a while since I played Dungeons and Dragons? Have we had a DC vs. Marvel movie yet? That would be really neato. Maybe we could get John Schlessinger to wake up for that one.

so will the studio still make movies NOT based on comics?

Other than Apatow will we all have to start writing comics in order to make a living in Hollywood?

I think I will write one called Angry Black Woman. I'm still working out what her superpowers will be. I do know her costume will be fierce!

On second thought nobody would buy it because we can't have a black female outside a Tyler Perry movie so forget. I write something else.

If I were to do a comic book, the one I would gravitate to is 'Howard the Duck.' Not the original movie but the original Frank Brunner comic book. It was smart and funny and pretty subversively dizzy. John Huston said remake the bad movies, not the good ones. I think it's a good idea so I'd do 'Howard the Duck.'

And after HOWARD THE DUCK, you can do RATBOY.

I've never heard of RAT BOY and I'm not a big fan of vermin. A new version of Ultra Man or UFO might be fun. Or Space 1999. I'd do it kind of futuristic retro seventies set ten years in the past...Is someone going to do Thor? Brad Bitt would work nicely for that. Does he do comic book movies? I wonder why not. I can't wait to see the next one so I can get bored out of my skull again. Can't wait until someone remakes both Lucas 'Star Wars' trilogies. Who should play Luke in the new New Hope? Any ideas, guys? Come on...
