Suffering of the Hens

I never eat Kentucky Fried Chicken anyway so I don't feel all that culpable. Nonetheless, what this video shows is vile and loathsome. Will the underclass fat-asses who gorge on KFC several times a week pay the slightest attention or experience even a moment's hesitation as they order up that next barrel? I agree with and admire the otherwise comical Pamela Anderson for trying to do something about it. Her suggestion that eating too much meat will result in poor sexual performance is, I feel, a fairly clever argument.

"Of course, the best thing that you can do to help animals is to stop eating them, so please consider trying a vegetarian diet -- just like me," she says. "And if you don't think animal cruelty is a strong enough argument for vegetarianism you might want to at least read up on how eating meat causes impotence and slows the flow of blood to all the organs, not just to the heart, if you catch my drift."

I didn't take it very seriously until other celebrities got into the act and those jerks got caught abusing the birds on video. It's just a shame that, like NIKE, they refuse to do anything about exploitation. I'm surprised the competition, like El Pollo Loco, hasn't exploited the animal rights angle in their ads.

KFC's chicken is the scrawny. It's on the verge of being quail. Now Bojangles is the place to eat the bird. Plus their Ice T is listed as a controlled substance.

If eating too much chicken keeps a single man from having sex with Pam Anderson, than those birds were sacrificed for a noble cause. You want to hit something after Tommy Lee, Kid Rock and a guy who humped Paris Hilton. That's unsanitary.

How many people got sick in the last few years from vegetables? And isn't it cruel and disgusting what Pam Anderson has done to her body?

Ice T is a person. Iced tea is a drink. Ice T is not a controlled substance, though I'm sure he's familiar with them.

I was expecting a higher quantity of defensive posts from the fast-food addict crowd. A single "vegetables can kill you" comment is kind of a letdown.

C'mon, guys, where's the outrage? Wells is being Un-American!

D.Z. -- is there any evidence El Pollo Loco treats their birds any better? I'd imagine most of these places are supplied by the same big factory farms.

since you've obviously not experienced the power of the Bojangle's Ice T (who has time to type those extra letters), I can assure you it is a nasty dose of stimulant with a lemon slice.

All I've seen this summer was tomatoes being taken off the shelves and menus. And now it's peppers?

The chicken is going to die anyway. If chickens could work DVD players, they'd probably want a swift death after seeing Barbed Wire.

I can just about guarantee you that unless a place is making big noise about using organic free range whatever, their birds are coming from the same kind of factory farm as KFC's. Popeye's, the cheap rotisserie chicken at Safeway, whatever. If you paid $3 for a chicken, it came from a factory farm. If you got one from an Amish Gunthorp free-rangey place, you paid $10.

They do this factory farm stuff not because they like torturing chickens but because it's cheaper and more efficient. Which means the alternative is a lot more expensive, and you know you're getting it when you pay that much for it.

Sorry, you're fooling yourself on that one. They're all coming from the same Tyson or Con-Agra farms, asses glued shut and beaks clipped off.

Basically, any place that gets food by any more humane means HAS to exploit that fact in its marketing to justify the extra cost they'll have to charge. So the places that do-- eg. Chipotle-- make a big noise about it.

El Pollo Loco is NOT making a big noise about it.

It's so repulsive the way you talk about the poor! If an enlightened, philosopher-king-in-exile type entertainment blogger like yourself can be - how do you want to look at it: blinded by the Goliath of advertising culture, optimistic in spirit, just plain clueless? - enough to think that El Pollo Loco doesn't source its meats from the same inhumane factory farms as KFC, just because Pamela Anderson hasn't made a YouTube video about them yet, then how strongly can we come down on the less privileged among us for being a step further behind?

I haven't eaten at a KFC for a few years now, but I miss their chicken. It used to taste much better back when the Colonel was alive. I'm sure he'd have none of this. I don't trust any fast food places-- any place where the managers are going to believe a voice on the phone is a police officer and force an employee to strip in the manager's office is a place where I'd rather not get my food. The biscuits were good, though. If I do get fast food, I treat it like I'm eating candy for lunch. If I get a craving, I just reach for a Shake 'N Bake. True story about McDonald's, though. The victimized woman got a million dollar settlement.

KC: Well, I imagine the reason the competition hasn't been targeted is because they're not the worst offenders. It's kind of like how I've chosen to vote for Obama, in spite of voting for FISA. I mean, if you're going to go that far, you could ask why Pam isn't demanding an end to the consumption of all meat. But you gotta take a stand when you can, and that's what she's doing.

You're weaseling, D.Z. You've used the phrase "I hope" a few too many times.

Considering the standards you hold other people to, why don't you
Google around and try to find some evidence that your favorite joint is more humane than KFC. (I have this crazy hunch you know how to search around for links online.)

If you can't find something more concrete than hunches and hope, quit eating there. If you can't find ANYPLACE better, quit eating chicken.

We expect nothing less of you, considering your ideals. Let us know what you find.

It ain't my favorite place, but I haven't heard anything negative, either. I imagine they'd be in trouble, if word did got out of abuse, though, since they like to pretend they're healthier than the competition. I googled a bit, and it looks like they're in the clear. Believe me, if I hear something, I'll act accordingly.

I also never said we should all aspire for sainthood, just act when possible. I mean, if I knew it would accomplish something, I'd have complained about Burger King previously being too cheap to pay an extra cent to its tomato-pickers; but this kind of bad press KFC gets works in the same way Wal Mart's bad press works against it. [I.E. It's one thing to be an awful place to work, but it's another to not even meet certain ethical standards as a business. ]

That's the thing, people are bashing KFC because attacking ig corporations is sport, but it's hypocrisy on the part of both DZ and Jeff.

Unless you've ONLY eaten free-range naturally-raised chicken from outfits like Gunthorp Farms at places like Zuni Cafe, or from Whole Foods, or whatever, you have eaten the same chickens raised exactly the same way as folks at KFC. That's chicken from the case at Von's, that's chicken on your pizza at California Pizza Kitchen, that's the chicken saladfrom room service at Sundance. All the same from Tyson, Con-Agra, Perdue or one of the other big factory farm chicken producers.

"That's the thing, people are bashing KFC because attacking ig corporations is sport..."

So what's your point?

If every company is using the same poor standards, then it makes perfect sense to go after the giant first - if KFC starts requiring that it's chickens be raised somewhat less cruelly, then it's safe to assume every other company will fall in line afterwards.

And there's plenty of gray area here - there's a wide range of options in-between free range and half-assed mass production slaughter.

The exact same problem exists in the cattle industry. They're all pen raised and fed nothing but corn and anti-biotics. Which primarily is the American public's fault for demanding cheaper food, and its secondarily the government's fault for subsizidizing corn and making it so cheap and unprofitable in the first place, thus 'feeding' the whole cycle.

I'm not saying it's a bad tactic. It's probably the most effective way to do it-- they'll have the clout with suppliers to change things.

I'm just saying anyone who gets holier than thou about chicken at KFC and the fatasses who eat them is deluding themselves if they think the chicken almost anywhere else, apart from a few yuppie restaurants who make a point of selling free-range meat, was raised in any different way whatsoever.

I agree with Mgmax, they simply went after the biggest name. We have some El Pollo Loco's out here and there is not indication that it is at all healthy food, if anything they are buying cheaper chicken than KFC.
I believe though that PETA did reach an agreement with McDonalds of all places to consult on their chicken farms. I find PETA people to be a little touched in the head but at times they are damn effective.
