"The legal definition of torture has been much aired in recent years, and I take Mamma Mia! to be a useful contribution to that debate," writes New Yorker critic Anthony Lane in a 7.28 posting.

"I thought that Pierce Brosnan had been dragged to the edge of endurance by North Korean sadists in his final Bond film, Die Another Day, but that was a quick tickle with a feather duster compared with the agony of singing Abba’s 'S.O.S.' to Meryl Streep through a kitchen window."

Anthony Lane writes like he's wearing a midget cockring and a jumbo buttplug. But then again, so do I.

This is the epitome of Anthony Lane. Just totally the perfect issue for him to seize on and overwrite overwrought about.

Glad to find a the Anti-Anthony fraternity. His writing, which used to be pleasant, has since become too impressed with itself and has the air of someone who always views cinema as something beneath him. He is always smarter than the film and you get the feeling that if he could, he would write the reviews ahead of watching the film in order to save himself the time of having to watch it. I have met him on a number of occasions and he is always very dapper and very charming, but I would hazard that his greatest regret is that he was not born Henry James.

Once heard Lane perform one of his peurile humorous essays at a New Yorker comedy festival. Talk about torture. Forget Henry James. He's settle for P. G. Wodehouse or even Tom Sharpe, but he's more like Fay Weldon on a bad day.

I saw the Pierce Brosnan bit (seriously, what?) and decided there was no need to read the rest. Here's a quote from the next issue:: "I thought Olivier put Dustin Hoffman through the wringer in Marathon Man, but that's nothing compared to the headache of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor"

Everyone prepared me for him to be dreadful, but there's actually kind of a nice David Bowie quality to his voice. He's obviously not a Rialto singer, but it was a perfectly charming average movie musical voice.

To be clear the movie really sucks. Worse green-screen than even THE BUCKET LIST, and Meryl Streep more miscast than she's ever been in her life.

This movie is just an assault on the senses, relentless in it's cheeriness with ms streep terribly miscast. Think Michelle Pfeiffer would have been better in every way. I love Greece but this film did not do it's location justice. It really was kind of painful.

Actually, I thought Spielberg turned it into an oversized episode of THE WALTONS.
