Obsessed With Film's Ray DeRousse argues strenuously against a "mumbling backlash" that has attacked Heath Ledger's Joker performance, or at least the Oscar talk that has greeted it. These contrarians are saying, he says, that Oscar talk wouldn't he happening if Ledger were alive. Anonymous chatrooms where? On how many sites?

Maybe the Oscar's are a bunch of BS, but Ledger's created, as you said jeffrey, one of the best villians of all time. Even if The Dark Knight somehow loses it's luster as a classic piece of cinema, Ledger's performance will be remembered for years. As others have stated, his is one outstanding performance among an excellent ensemble.

Fuck the Oscars.
But a note to Warners... meet with Jude Law and beg and plead for him to take over the role in the third one.

With the way Law played the villan in The Road to Perdition, I'd definitely be pumped about seeing him in the next Batman, although probably not as the Joker.
Ledger was f'in phenomenal. Any and all criticism should be directed at the Nolans for creating a character with no backstory, no restrictions, no rules under which Heath had to operate. That's on them. What Heath did with their role was flat-out remarkable.

I love reading that people say that the Oscar buzz surrounding Heath Ledger's brilliant performance wouldn't be happening if he hadn't died.
Too bad the people started talking about the ingenuity and energy of his performance directly from the set here in Chicago last summer. The words "Oscar", 'Joker" and "Heath Ledger" were strung together when he was alive and well; that's yet another reason why he deserves the Oscar.

I don't really feel like it's an Oscar-type performance, per se...but considering how many of my friends are calling TDK "the best movie I've ever seen," I'm starting to think a Best Picture nod may not be out of the question.

And I'll add...it's a hell of a lot better of a movie than Gladiator.

All of the hype made me approach seeing the new Batman movie with dread, fearing I would suffer the disappointment I experienced watching "There Will Be Blood."
But Ledger's performance lived up to the hype, in my eyes. The thing that struck me about it was that it was something new. So many of the most famous "villain" portrayals of the last 30 years have been derivative of an archetype: Bill the Butcher, Darth Vader, Hannibal Lector, any of the Spider Man villains, and others all drew from powerful, authoritative, "I'm bad and in control" characterisms that have been done, in one way or another, since the 50s. But Ledger's Joker was frail, nihilistic, mentally ill - the antithesis of power. I'm not sure where it came from, but it was entirely fresh for me.

I think Jude Law would make a fantastic Riddler (especially if you think about the Riddler acting like 'Road to Perdition' but moving like 'A.I.'). Not sure about the Joker.

Hey iamjoe...weren't you on the set last summer. Didn't you mention how awesome Ledger's acting was?
Hehe, just joking with ya.
Anyways, I'd love to see Jude Law plays against type as a Batman villian. But NOT the Joker. You can't top TDK with the Joker. It would be pointless to bring him back in anything but a cameo or voiceover of unused Ledger footage/dialogue.
I also agree Law was stunning in Road to Perdition and think he would make a great Riddler...
