Tracking

Hellboy II: The Golden Army is tracking the strongest among Friday's openers -- 77, 33 and 15. Journey to the Center of the Earth is at 82, 21 and 7 (fair, needs to do better), and Eddie Murphy's Meet Dave is running at 65, 17 and 2 (bomb).

The Dark Knight (opening 7.18) is running at 85, 65 and 31 overall. The first choice figure among older and younger men is 41, at 25 among younger women, and 19 among older women. Obviously looking at very big business. Mamma Mia, which is opening against Knight, is running 19 for first choice among 25-plus women, but at 8 first choice overall. Older and younger men aren't interested. Space Chimps (also opening on 7.18) is running at 48, 12 and 0.

Stepbrothers, opening on 7.25, is at 66, 37 and 2 -- people aren't focusing at this stage, campaign has some work to do. The X-Files: I Want to Believe, opening the same day, is at 59, 23 and 3.

I feel like X-Files has been very low key so far. I'm someone who watched the show on and off - never a die hard - and I'm curious about it. But I haven't seen anything to get me really excited and haven't felt any buzz.

Space Chimps, on the other hand....

The second X-Files movie actually looks good, which surprises me, considering how long it took to get off the ground.

I'm glad to hear that xfiles is supposed to be a stand alone suspense thriller rather than the alien conspiracy thing. The best of the tv show episodes were the well-written and acted stand alone stories where the focus was the two leads getting to play off each other.

Stepbrothers looks strange and good.

I have not seen any trailers or clips from Meet Dave, just that freaky giant head car that Jeff posted a picture of.

Not that I want to. Just surprised marketing isn't saturating us.

The X-Files campaign is really only kicking off now. The fanbase itself is rabid at the moment and it'll be interesting to see how tracking picks up closer to the release date.
For what it's worth, I think it looks like one of the better offerings of the summer but it's gonna be a tough weekend after TDK opens.
Then again, as a die-hard fan, I have to announce bias.
I just can't get that excited about Batman and his tortured past, Ledger notwithstanding.

LYT, I happened to catch half an episode of Hannah Montana while folding laundry on Saturday (yikes), and I saw three ads for Meet Dave. So I think they must be going straight for the kiddie vote (could also explain the low tracking; obivously this isn't shaping up to be one of Murphy's biggest but I'd be surprised if it opens to less than Journey to the Center of the Earth).

You know, the movie doesn't look good, but it does look (a.) less crass and obnoxious than Norbit and (b.) like it has kind of a funny concept (not executed particularly well). But damn, wasn't that concept much more clear when the movie was called STARSHIP DAVE? I actually thought that was a pretty good title and the change to MEET DAVE is head-slapping. (Well, assuming a late-period Eddie Murphy cash grab is worth the physical effort to slap anyone or anything, which it probably isn't.)

There's lots of us! Believe me! David Duchovny has started a blog and Frank Spotnitz has an amazing blog where he constantly responds to people's questions.Evasively and vaguely but with a definite wink. For a long-time fan like me, it's sheer bliss to have such instant feedback from the people whose work you're eventually going to pay to see.

While I'm interested in the new film, I'm a bit worried about some comments Chris Carter made recently, where he said that if it does well, then they'd look into doing more films that deal with the mythology.

I really don't want to see THE X-FILES disappear up its own arse again.

Well neither does any of us but the aliens are coming in 2012, remember? He has to make it before then in case we're all sucked into a spaceship for a lifetime of anal probing and teeth drilling.

I think it's a great idea. They were constantly under pressure to write a finale every season for the last 3 and as a result they had to jump the gun on the entire storyline. I really don't think you can lay the blame solely at Carter's feet. Fox had him boxed in a corner. Just the way they like 'em.
Anybody who is going to see this is going at least 5 times. Including me!

I'll be seeing it, but only once. I'm kind surprised that Fox isn't using the '15th anniversary' gimmick to help sell the movie. The trailers look relatively unimpressive, but the show has a track record that more than affords it the benefit of the doubt (I actually prefer the character driven smaller scale stuff of seasons six and seven, for whatever that's worth). Even as I watched the trailer, relatively unimpressed, I started grinning like an idiot once I heard that whistle at the end.

calraigh: I gave up on X-Files after the last movie, but this one looks like it's got better suspense. Though I doubt Carter's gonna be cranking out movies any time soon, even if this one is a hit, because it's all about Duchovny and Anderson's paychecks and schedules.

I was 11 years old when I saw my first episode of the X-Files, Ice, the episode that ripped off John Carpenter's The Thing (not that I knew that at the time). Since then, the X-Files have been a part of my very DNA, and I can not wait for this movie.

D.Z- He's shooting an indie, a semi-autobiographical, self-penned script at the moment. It's called 'Fencewalkers' and whether it sees the light of day or not (his words) he's definitely back in the saddle. As for Duchovny and Anderson, they did this movie for absolute pittance. We're talking 100 grand, tops. There's no doubt if they make a profit with this that they'll be doing another one. I'm really excited for this film and especially since Carter is directing this time around and Spotnitz is on script duties.
I couldn't agree more as regards the first movie but Rob Bowman is a different animal entirely. The whole thing looked like it was shot on a very shoddy sound stage. Even the scenes that weren't. That said, there were some great moments to be had.
The hallway scene? Goddamn bee...
