Fantasy Moguls' Steve Mason is reporting that the all-night shows of The Dark Knight that began late last night have earned $18.4 million. Wait...the film has made that much in the last twelve hours? This beats the midnight opening record of Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith, Mason says.

Wow - that's impressive, if true. How many theaters in the US were having midnight & early morning screenings? I know ArcLIght Hollywood is doing continuous shows for the first 24 hours, but that can't be the norm, of course. The 18.4M for ticket sales is impressive enough - just think of the money the average fanboy spent on soda & nachos on top of that, and this flick is like X-Mas times 2 for the average exhibitor.

I've been listening to Steve Mason on sports radio for years and I've never really heard him talk about movies much, and when he does, it's very much from the jock's perspective (for ex., I think he complained about the ending of "No Country for Old Men.")
However, it's nice that he has a passion for box office numbers I guess.

Shame, I never even paid to see TDK and loved it so much. Maybe I should see it again, and pay, just to show some gratitude.

Meanwhile, the new American Teen advertisements are leading with the boobs, front and center, even more shamelessly than the last set of advertisements. This from a "documentary"

For what? Forgive me, I don't pay much attention to box office or budget numbers.

Beating Sith ain't no small thing and it's a good thing, given that TDK is at least twice the film that Sith is.

It's not too soon to ask, though: Where can Nolan possibly go from here with Film #3? Should he quit while he's on top? Who can possibly follow what Ledger has done here? I pity the fool who tries....

I had no idea that Fantasy Mogul Steve Mason was the same as ESPNRadio Steve Mason. Nor, for that matter, that it was the same Steve Mason who has tried to add me on Facebook approximately 15 times.
I'm glad I hit "deny" all those times, because this dude knows nothing about movies OR sports.

Can anyone tell me if I should expect long ticket-holder lines?
I've got my tix for 8:30 tomorrow night, IMAX. But I wonder if people are showing up hours early to get a good seat.
And now I have to stay off these threads for the next 30 hours or so. Already encountered a couple of possible spoilers here. Oh, the pain! It feels like 1980.

Media By Numbers was there first to report this. Nikki Finke quoted Paul on it...it also broke IMAX record.

For those asking about long ticket-holder lines...good god, get there early! I went to midnight show last night and I got there at 10:15 only to sit in the third row of a 600 capacity theater.
Then I went to a 4:15 today, showed up at 3:00 to see a lengthy line already forming...especially if your in IMAX, you MUST get there atleast 90 minutes early if you don't want to sit in the first row.

The articles about the $18.4 million said that DOES NOT include the 3 am and 6 am showings.

Though you have to take into account that Star Wars frenzy in general ran its course by that time. And no one was hyping the the third film the way they were with TDK.
frank: I had a long line at The Grove, but got a good seat 10 minutes before the show.
