Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Wire Fu

The best documentary of the year so far, hands down. One of the best of the century, no lie. Plays like a suspense thriller and a poem at the same time.

Well, I beg to disagree. The stunt is awesome, but the film told me waaaaay more than I needed to know about the technical and logistical aspects of the feat. Plus, Petit comes off as a self-centered shit who dumped his adoring and loyal girlfriend as soon as he became famous. Best doc of the century? Please! Errol Morris has made about six films better than this one.
Although I must say there are a few great moments involving the cop who arrested Petit. This guy was the star of the film for me, an Average Joe who completely understood the magnitude of the stunt, and how he had become part of history.

Errol Morris has only released two docs this century. (I doubt Wells was implying the last 100 years.)

I love the one sheet for this. Too bad that they will never be able to make this into a feature starring Leo and filmed in IMAX. Damn terrorists. (I should be content w/ the doc, but TDK has made me IMAX hungry.)

Philippe Petit is the new king of daredevil comedy. Compare his antics to Harold Lloyd in Safety First. The shot of Philippe balancing the cop's hat on the tip of his nose, and then swiveling it perfectly onto his head with a wry smile was as amazing as his death defying stunt. My stomach had an out of body experience watching this film. If there is a god in cinema heaven Petit and Jackie Chan will do a film together, oui?

I don't doubt this is a good doc, but what's with the 9/11 imagery? Come on ... this is some self-aggrandizing adrenalin-junkie who tightroped between the buildings 34 years ago, and the trailer is cut with a banking airplane and allusions to things "falling". Give me a break.

I don't mean to diminish the feat, just the trailer, as if there is some parallel between the poor schmucks who died at the hands of the plane attack in 2001 and the entirely self-centered stunt in 1974. I can even appreciate the nostalgia for the buildings, but man, what a manipulative trailer.

If you don't get the relation between guys who turned the same buildings into media events in two extraordinarily different ways-- one inspiring, one horrific-- well, not sure what to say to you.
