Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Young and Foolish

"Everything Is Cinema is important because it is an honest, intelligent and often eloquent treatment of a major motion picture artist [i.e., Jean-Luc Godard]. Sometimes reading it is a bit like riding a train that is chugging dutifully up a hill; at other times it's a roller coaster of exciting ideas. Either way, like a Godard film, the journey turns out to be worth it." -- from Jeanine Basinger's 7.23 N.Y. Times review. Wait...the book came out two months ago (on 5.13)?

I guess we should just ignore it because SO much has changed in relation to Jean-Luc Godard to make it not current.

Or perhaps you should stop beating that particular dead-ass horse (that anything older than 30 mins is passe on the net) and realize that for serious cinephiles (say, like you believe yourself to be) who don't care about how well made THE DARK KNIGHT is, it's still a silly comic book film here is a gift horse to help sustain them before the serious movie fan fall season arrives.
